Diljit Dosanjh’s Sardaarji 2 Is Silly Fun

Starring: Diljit Dosanjh

Directed by: Rohit Jugraj

Diljit Dosanjh is no longer a superstar in Punjab alone. Udta Punjab introduced him to a pan-India audience. Not that his aptitudes  needed a wider exposure. Diljit is a lot more influential in the entertainment business than the reach of his mother tongue.

Sardaarji 2, a sequel to last year’s blockbuster, shows why Dosanjh, more than any other contemporary actor from outside Bollywood has the ability to break free of linguistic barriers and shine across the Indian moviegoers’ bandwidth. He is wise and wacky, smart and silly, savvy and goofy. He respects women the way Manoj Kumar and more recently [tooltip id=”88b6af99531f838ed90aed058b7d870a”][tooltip id=”c1b465420d07c688942ed18eadfd9f92″ keyword_color=”#000000″ background_color=”#ffffff”][tooltip id=”4db8f5608d45f5de7881d9bce162f4bf”]Salman Khan[/tooltip][/tooltip][/tooltip] used to. The sexy ladies can woo him and the camera with their hot antics. He remainsmonkishly detached from worldly desires and childlike in his monkey tricks.

In his newest made-to-order star-outing—his third in 3  months—Diljit is  a humble farmer from Punjab(hence the pretext for a barebodied plough-on-the- shoulder slow-mo shot) who must travel to Australia to make money to save his ancestral land.

It’s a clever premise to work a Diljit-centric plot around. Director Rohit Jugraj keeps the proceedings flowing smoothly, if not always fluently. There are way too many ,shall we say, female attractions, popping up to distract our celibate Diljit who true to his image of the asexual lover-boy never kisses, cuddles or fondles his heroines and apparently uses his hand only tie the turban .

One encounter with the very sexy Monica Gill  where the two break into a massive hand-to-hand combat in the lobby of a psychiatrist’s office , is hilarious and great fun. Diljit and the oomphy Ms Gill play well against one another, sparingly sexily through the story’s stretch,  something like Manoj Kumar and Zeenat Aman in RotiKapada Aur Makaan wherein the temptress can get as soaked in the rain as much she likes.

Our hero ain’t joining in. No way. He has far more important things to take of .Like rescuing the other heroine(Sonam Bajwa) from a catastrophic wedding, struggling to sound like a bumpkin who can ,ummm, walk English talk English…get the drift? Then Jaggi(that’s our six-packed sex-axed farmer-hero)must  act the cute uncle to a precocious little NRI girl who speaks like she popped straight into Sydney from Bhatinda…

Yup, Diljit is a very busy man in Sardaarji 2.He is Akshay in Singh Is King with no time to experiment with thebling. He keeps the otherwise-staid  plot on its toes, negotiating his way through a series of antics and adventures of a Punjabi abroad with a self-restraint that goes a long way in connecting the hero’s adventures to the audience.

Apart from his ability to make the mundane look perky, Dilijt also has some terrific music  to perform on screen. The songs do not break the flow of the narrative. Know why? Because the flow is not to be taken seriously at all.

Care for an evening of undemanding movie-based joy? Sardaarji 2 is just the antidote to Raman Raghav’s murky dark and depressing goings-on. This frothy fun silly escapade  is seriously for Anurag Kashyap and all his desperately unhappy followers.
