DJ Quik is an American rapper and record producer who has a net worth of $500 thousand. Involved in the G-funk sub-genre of West Coast hip hop, DJ Quik is best known for his 1991 single “Tonite” from his debut studio album “Quik is the Name.” His subsequent albums have included “Way 2 Fonky,” “Safe + Sound,” “Trauma,” and “The Book of David.”

Early Life

DJ Quik, whose real name is David Blake, was born on January 18, 1970 in Compton, California. In his early adolescence, he began selling homemade mixtapes using a turntable he was gifted and started DJing in shows around Southern California. Quik was involved with the Bloods-affiliated Tree Top Piru gang set, which he later admitted he regretted. When he was 16, he dropped out of high school and was houseless for around three years.

Career, 1990-1999

In the summer of 1990, Quik signed a contract with Profile Records. Early the next year, he released his debut studio album, “Quik is the Name,” which debuted and peaked at number 29 on the Billboard 200. The album launched the successful singles “Born and Raised in Compton” and “Tonite,” the latter of which reached number 49 on the Billboard Hot 100, number 13 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, and number three on the Hot Rap Tracks chart. Later in 1991, Quik produced the self-titled debut album by Compton hip hop duo 2nd II None. The next year, he released his second studio album, “Way 2 Fonky,” and co-produced the album “Paid the Cost” by the duo Penthouse Players Clique.

Quik’s third studio album, “Safe + Sound,” came out in early 1995 and reached number 14 on the Billboard 200 and number one on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. In 1996, Quik was a producer on 2Pac’s legendary fourth studio album “All Eyez on Me.” He also produced the hit song “Let’s Get Down” from Tony! Toni! Toné!’s album “House of Music.” In 1997, Quik produced the debut solo album by Suga Free, entitled “Street Gospel.” The following year, he released his fourth studio album, “Rhythm-al-ism,” which became certified Gold in 1999. Quik had many producing credits in 1999, including 2nd II None’s album “Classic 220” and Snoop Dogg’s “No Limit Top Dogg.”

Career, 2000-Present

In 2000, Quik released his fifth studio album, “Balance & Options.” It debuted at number 18 on the Billboard 200 but was Quik’s first album not to receive an RIAA certification. Because of its disappointing sales, Quik was dropped by his label. He went on to produce for such artists as Big Skye, Janet Jackson, and Kurupt. Through the independent label Ark 21 Records, Quik released his sixth studio album, “Under tha Influence,” in 2002. It was another commercial disappointment. Quik subsequently produced for Truth Hurts, Will Smith, and Talib Kweli, among many other artists. After nearly retiring, he had newfound success as a producer on Jay-Z’s “The Black Album” and Chingy’s “Jackpot” in 2003. The same year, he worked with Marcus Miller on the soundtrack to the film “Head of State.” In 2004, Quik was a producer on Ludacris’s album “The Red Light District,” and in 2005 he released the album “Trauma,” the first on his new label Mad Science Recordings.

In late 2007, Quik formed the supergroup the Fixxers with fellow rapper AMG. The same year, he had a guest role on the television sitcom “Everybody Hates Chris,” in the episode “Everybody Hates DJ’s.” In 2008, Quik formed the production supergroup QDT with Snoop Dogg and Teddy Riley to produce Snoop Dogg’s album “Ego Trippin’.” He went on to release the collaborative album “BlaQKout” with Kurupt in 2009. In the spring of 2011, Quik released the album “The Book of David,” featuring appearances by Ice Cube, Bizzy Bone, Suga Free, and Bun B, among other artists. The album debuted and peaked at number 55 on the Billboard 200. Quik’s next studio album, “The Midnight Life,” came out in 2014; it featured appearances by such artists as Mack 10, Joi, and Bishop Lamont. Later, in 2017, he released the collaborative album “Rosecrans: The Album” with rapper Problem. The pair released another collaborative album, “Chupacabra,” in 2024.

Assault Conviction

In 2003, Quik was arrested for allegedly assaulting his sister with a pistol. He was convicted three years later and sentenced to five months in prison.

Wife and Children

Quik married Alicia Hill in 2005. He has three children: David Jr., Davieanna, and Alcinina. In 2013, Davieanna was arrested and charged with first-degree murder in the beating death of her two-year-old son. Later, in 2022, David Jr. was arrested and charged with second-degree murder in connection to a fatal shooting in Los Angeles. He was convicted three years later and faced up to 40 years in prison.
