When one thinks of Jonah Hauer-King, you can be forgiven for calling to remembrance his role as Prince Eric in Disney’s 2023 live-action film, The Little Mermaid. Since bringing the fun days to life, the actor has taken up darker roles, appearing as Lali Sokolov in The Tattooist of Auschwitz and most recently as Milo Griffin in I Know What You Did Last Summer. With the premiere of the slasher sequel, one can safely assume that Hauer-King has entered his horror era and there is more to come. The Doctor Who actor is set to star in writer and director Anna Biller‘s third feature, The Face of Horror, which will serve as her follow-up to the 2016 film, The Love Witch.
Biller’s upcoming supernatural thriller sees a woman return from death as a vindictive spirit to torment her adulterous husband. Production is set to begin in Prague this month. While speaking with Deadline at the premiere of I Know What You Did Last Summer, Hauer-King discussed the upcoming film and his role in it. The Threesome star revealed excitement at the prospect of playing a “villainous” character in the supernatural thriller. “I start next week. Yeah, I shoot that this summer,” he told the outlet. “I play this really villainous, horrible knight, who really has no redeeming qualities whatsoever, which is kinda fun.”
Biller is best known for the horror comedy, The Love Witch, which is now a cult favorite. The filmmaker returns with a tale set in 14th century medieval England and inspired in part by the Japanese ghost story Yotsuya Kaidan. Hauer-King goes on to discuss what it has been like working with the acclaimed indie filmmaker, adding,”I’ve been getting to know her over the last year or so, and she’s got such an amazing, creative mind and brain—again, people say this a lot—but has genuine individual vision. If you’ve seen The Love Witch, you know. She has such a particular visual style and type of storytelling.”
What is Anna Biller’s ‘The Face of Horror’ About?
The screenplay for The Face of Horror is written by Biller, who will co-produce the film alongside Mike Goodridge and James Bowsher. Cinematographer M. David Mullen will shoot the film on 35mm, and Hauer-King is pumped about the experience, saying, “It’s the first time I’ve done that, so I’m very excited.” The ensemble for the supernatural thriller besides Hauer-King includes Kristine Froseth, Ellie Bamber, Leo Suter, and Bella Heathcote. A story of betrayal and revenge, The Face of Horror follows Edward Carnifex (Hauer-King), a knight who marries his longtime love Eleanor (Froseth), only to grow bored and pursue a wealthy noblewoman, played by Heathcote. When Eleanor dies, her spirit returns from beyond the grave to torment her unfaithful husband. Bamber plays Eleanor’s sister Beatrice, while Suter portrays Richard, Edward’s squire and Beatrice’s love interest.
The Face of Horror will begin production in Prague this month. Stay tuned to Collider for updates.
