Sarah Ferguson has remained loyal to her ex-husband, Andrew Windsor-Mountbatten, formerly known as Prince Andrew, despite his many scandals. Now, after the Royal Family moved to strip her titles as well as those of her disgraced ex, does Ferguson still believe Andrew?
Ferguson, who married Andrew in 1986, maintained a close friendship with the former Duke of York after their 1992 separation, even living with him at his Royal Lodge residence until the October announcement that Andrew would be moved to a private residence.
Also caught up in the Jeffrey Epstein scandal, Ferguson lost her Duchess of York title, even though she’d ceased using it professionally years earlier, and will no longer be housed by the Royal Family. Reports claim that Ferguson is eyeing a move to Portugal amid backlash over her emails to Epstein, from whom she allegedly borrowed large sums of money over the years.
So, what does this mean for Ferguson and Andrew’s friendship? And more specifically, does Ferguson believe Andrew is innocent of the allegations leveled against him by Epstein accuser Virginia Giuffre?
According to former BBC royal correspondent Jennie Bond, the possibility that Ferguson is distancing herself from her ex-husband may speak volumes about how she views him.
“I am surprised that it seems Sarah and Andrew are now going their separate ways. I thought they were joined at the hip, even though no longer in a romantic relationship,” Bond told the Mirror.
“Sarah has always been so fiercely loyal to Andrew, defending him even in the face of the most sordid allegations,” Bond said. “Perhaps she no longer believes him, or perhaps Andrew now wants to be on his own.”
As a reminder, Ferguson has remained publicly loyal to Andrew in the 14 years since Giuffre, who died in April, first came forward to allege that she was trafficked to Queen Elizabeth’s son by Epstein three times when she was 17.
In response to reports that Ferguson is considering moving to Portugal, where younger daughter Eugenie lives part-time, Bond said, “I don’t think many people would criticise a loving daughter for helping her mother. Whatever else you say about Sarah and, indeed Andrew, they have been good parents who have somehow created a very strong and unified household despite their divorce.”
In a 2011 email that surfaced earlier this year, Ferguson told Epstein that she still considered him a “supreme friend” despite denouncing him in the press following his sex trafficking conviction. Epstein died in prison in 2019 while awaiting trial for more sex trafficking charges.
