Fallout Season 2: Release Date, Cast, Story & Everything We Know

Prime Video’s Fallout season 1 impressed critics and audiences alike, with season 2 soon to be released. Perhaps the biggest difference between the show and other video game adaptations was Fallout‘s timeline and setting. The live-action show was constructed to fit within the continuity of the game series, rather than serve as a direct adaptation of an existing story.

This made Fallout entirely unique, as it worked both as a standalone story for those unfamiliar with the game series and fans of the former installments. By the time of Fallout season 1’s ending, this became ever clearer thanks to how well-received the show was across the board.

As one of the shows that proved we are firmly in the golden age of video game adaptations, Fallout became a smash hit for Prime Video. Fallout‘s impressive viewership record reinforced this, leading many to eagerly anticipate a second season. Thankfully, Fallout season 2 was confirmed very quickly, promising more TV adventures in the wasteland.

Fallout Season 2 Cast Details

Walton Goggins in Fallout

Fallout season 2’s cast will be largely the same as the first season, only with a few notable additions. Ella Purnell will return as one of the series’ leads, Lucy MacLean, alongside Walton Goggins as Cooper Howard/The Ghoul. Both have spoken candidly about their respective characters’ futures, with Fallout season 2’s trailer offering first looks at their continued journeys.

Aaron Moten will also return as Maximus, a knight of the Brotherhood of Steel, who formed a close bond with Lucy in Fallout season 1. Other returning cast members include Kyle MacLachlan as Lucy’s father, Hank, Moisés Arias as Norm, Lucy’s brother, and Xelia Mendes-Jones as Dane, a Brotherhood ally of Maximus.

Other cast members reprising their roles from season 1 include:

  • Leslie Uggams as Betty Pearson
  • Johnny Pemberton as Thaddeus
  • Leer Leary as Davey
  • Frances Turner as Barb Howard
  • Teagan Meredith as Janey Howard
  • Michael Cristofer as Elder Cleric Quintu
  • Jon Daly as Snake Oil Salesman

New cast members confirmed for Fallout season 2 include Macaulay Culkin in an as-yet-unnamed recurring role. Justin Theroux will also play a major role, that of Robert House, a character from the video games who was instrumental in the lead-up to the nuclear war that decimated the world.

Based on where Fallout season 1’s ending left off and the hints from season 2’s trailer, the story of the upcoming continuation becomes clear. The final shot of Fallout season 1 saw Lucy’s father, exposed for his role as a Vault-Tec employee who helped his company organize the nuclear war in a bid for control, fleeing to New Vegas.

New Vegas is a major Fallout game location, with Theroux’s aforementioned Robert House as its leader. Fallout season 2’s trailer shows pre-war flashbacks to Cooper Howard’s meetings with Robert House, meaning the latter could be linked to the former’s search for his family.

This all ties back to Hank and Vault-Tec, too, explaining why Lucy and Cooper, now known as The Ghoul, have teamed up for Fallout season 2. Then there is Maximus, who is now hailed as a hero in the Brotherhood of Steel, who will have to navigate his faction’s politics while trying to find a way back to Lucy.

Fallout season 2’s story will also flesh out the events going on in Vault 33, Lucy’s home. Season 1 saw Norm uncover the dark truth that Vaults 33 and 32 were being controlled by Vault-Tec’s employees, who were cryogenically frozen before the war and regularly unfrozen to serve as the Vaults’ various administrators.

In the final episode of Fallout season 1, Norm was trapped inside Vault 31, the place that houses these cryo pods. Therefore, Fallout season 2 will further detail his attempts to uncover this conspiracy, which ties more than he knows to Lucy’s discoveries about their father, Hank.

Fallout season 2 is one of the most anticipated installments in recent TV history, especially given the immense reaction to season 1. As such, any and all news is highly welcomed. Filming for Fallout season 2 began in November 2024 and ran until May 2025. During filming, Walton Goggins teased what was to come in Fallout season 2:

“Now that people understand what the world is, this story just takes it to a whole other level. I’ve been around a long time, and usually, a show that people are attracted to, with that license, the second season really starts cooking, right? That’s when some real magic can happen.”

Beyond other cast details, the biggest piece of news was Fallout season 2’s first official trailer. The trailer was released in August 2025 at a Gamescom event, tying back to the franchise’s video game roots. This was later accompanied by a feature on Fallout season 2 by Empire Magazine.

During this feature, Ella Purnell teased Lucy’s character arc, as well as how Lucy and The Ghoul’s relationship pans out in Fallout season 2. Purnell stated that “At times it’s like they’re on a buddy road trip,” before insisting that this can switch on a dime to the point where they are at odds with each other.

Purnell went on to talk about how the two characters end up rubbing off on one another. Purnell teasingly questions whether The Ghoul will turn good or whether Lucy will turn bad, or whether both will end up somewhere in the middle. As the wait for Fallout season 2 grows shorter, more news like this is expected, as are more trailers and behind-the-scenes looks.
