IU and Park Bo Gum‘s Netflix K-Drama When Life Gives You Tangerines has left viewers sobbing through the episodes…

…but one scene from Episode 13 provided the much-needed comic relief.
This scene, now a fan favorite worldwide, shows Park Chung Seop (actor Kim Seon Ho) visiting his girlfriend Yang Geum Myeong’s (idol and actress IU) parents and struggling to impress his father-in-law-to-be (actor Park Hae Joon).
Geum Myeong tells Chung Seop that he’ll have to make an effort to win over her father. At first, Chung Seop resists, saying it is not in his personality to be outwardly affectionate. But when Geum Myeong says she won’t get married without her father’s approval, Chung Seop does his best to charm Gwan Sik.

Following the show’s huge success, the cast and director of When Life Gives You Tangerines sat down for a new behind-the-scenes commentary video. In this video, director Kim Won Suk praised Kim Seon Ho’s attention to detail—revealing that none of the scene’s hilarious moments were written in the script!
IU: His slapstick comedy in this scene was brilliant. It’s not in the script, right?
Kim Won Suk: It’s not. All of it was his idea.
[Chung Seop’s Line]
Kim Won Suk: Right before he says that line, he speaks in his normal voice for a second. That was his idea too. His acting is so detailed.
