Filmfare Awards Nomination Are Plainly Weird

Published

on

Manoj Bajpai’s extraordinarily-nuanced performances in Gul Guleiyen and Missing in 2018 have been snubbed by Filmfare awards. These films and performances are completely obliterated from the list. And Bajpai took to twitter to protest.

But that isn’t all that’s strange about the Filmfare awards nominations for 2018. There is an abundance of overlapping in the list. For example, Ayushmann Khurrana is nominated for Best Actor in both the popular category and the critics’ choice. And how did Ranbir Kapoor’s performance in Sanju qualify as a critics’ choice? Sanju was among the top grossers of 2018.

Ayushmann Khurrana in Andha Dhun features in both the critics’ and popular lists for Best Actor. Is this to say Andha Dhun was both popular and critically acclaimed?

Sanju an appalling whitewashing job on the life and crimes of Sanjay Dutt is nominated for Best Film. While Diljit Dosanjh for his rousing take on the rise and fall of hockey player Sandeep Singh is left out???!!! On the other hand Shah Rukh Khan in the thundering flop Zero is nominated for best actor.Strange.

Is there any method to the zigzagging fate of the nominees this year at Filmafare’s? Everyone’s favourite Alia Bhatt figures in both the ‘best actress’ the ‘critics’ choice’ lists. In fact so many seriously endowed and performance got left behind , like Saif Ali Khan in Baazaar and Sushant Singh Rajput in Kedarnath.

And why nominate Rajkummar Rao for Stree and not Omerta? Because it’s the politically correct thing to do? In that case why nominate Ranveer Singh for Best Actor in that awful hammy performance in Padmaavat when Ranveer was and out-and-villain plunder and debauch, and not for Simmba where he was terrific as a corrupt cop who learns to walk on the straight narrow road?

I wish our awards would learn to do the same.
