Yeah, right, Gaara, the character who is widely considered the coolest and among the most loved in Naruto, almost got a name so bad that Masashi Kishimoto’s editor simply did not allow it to happen. According to Kishimoto’s 2013 interview in Naruto Meigen Shū – Kizuna (translated by Yagami1211), Gaara was originally supposed to be named Kotarou Fuuma.
Yeah, you are reading that right. Kishimoto admits the argument over that name went on for weeks. The story behind it is funny, absurd, and so typically ‘Kishimoto’. Let’s break it down.
‘Kotarou Fuuma’: The Shocking Truth Behind Gaara’s Original Name in Naruto
Before turning into the terrifying (and later, soft-hearted) Kazekage, Gaara almost known in Naruto with a completely different name: Kotarou Fuuma. Sounds like a historic ninja, doesn’t it? That’s because it is.
Kishimoto initially figured this name suited a Sand ninja just right after all, ‘Fuuma Kotarou’ is an actual legendary ninja from Japanese history, recognized for stealthy attacks and night raids. But when Kishimoto presented it, his editor straight away threw a kunai at the idea.
Kishimoto said:

For me, Gaara’s name was supposed to be Kotarou Fuuma. But my editor strongly disagreed. I objected and said it was a name fitting for a sand ninja and that went on for weeks.
Ouch. That’s like perfecting your best trick for months just to hear your coach say, “Nope, do it again.” Kishimoto eventually gave up and asked, frustrated, “Then how am I supposed to call him ?” His editor randomly replied, ‘Gaara.’
The editor clarified that the kanji signified ‘an Ashura that only likes himself,’ which was precisely what Gaara’s whole ‘lonely demon kid’ theme was. Kishimoto was on board with the new name right away. But here’s the catch: later, the editor admitted he actually borrowed the name from a ski resort called Gaara Yuzawa.
Kishimoto’s reaction after knowing it? “That’s just bullshit!” Nevertheless, it was too late. The name had already made its way into the manga, and the rest is anime history. Honestly, the name ‘Gaara’ just hits different. It feels mysterious, powerful, and a bit tragic, exactly like his story.
The kanji (我愛羅) could be interpreted as ‘self-love’ or ‘a demon who only loves himself.’ That was not simply a nice name; it was actually his whole personality arc in Part 1 of Naruto. He initially appears as a demon who considers love a weakness, but later he is the Kazekage who shields the people.
The name that once signified the self-centeredness of a man is now the one associated with his redemption and power. Could you ever see ‘Kotarou Fuuma’ delivering heart-touching speeches on suffering and forgiveness? We certainly cannot.
Kishimoto’s Other Naming Nightmares: How Naruto Characters Got Their Name
Gaara was not the sole character to cause a headache to Kishimoto in the naming phase. In the same interview, he acknowledged that naming characters was one of his biggest struggles, especially during the Chunin Exam arc when he had to think of a dozen new ninja names in a week.

Kishimoto explained:
When the Chunnin Exam started, I had to come up with names for ALL THE ROOKIES in just one week. I didn’t know what to do. I remember one time, when looking at a screw, I had an idea and gave his name to Neji.
Yup, Neji Hyuga’s name came from a screw on Kishimoto’s desk. Peak creative desperation. Additionally, there are Haku (which means ‘white,’ matching his pale appearance and pure heart), Kiba (from ‘fang,’ due to his dog-like traits), and Inuzuka (which translates as ‘dog clan’).
It seems as if Kishimoto went through a Japanese dictionary and said, “Hmm, that sounds cool, let’s use that!” In the end, Gaara’s name drama is a prime example of a happy mishap. Kishimoto’s stubbornness, his editor’s weird inspiration, and one ski trip led to a name that captured everything about the character’s pain and redemption.
If the editor hadn’t said ‘no’ to Kotarou Fuuma, we would probably never have come to know Gaara of the Desert, one of the most beloved and emotionally layered characters in Naruto. So yeah, sometimes, it turns out your editor telling you “That’s a terrible idea” might just be the best thing that ever happens to your story.
So, did you know Gaara almost had a totally different name? Would ‘Kotarou Fuuma of the Desert’ still hit the same? Share your thoughts in the comments section below. We would love to hear them out.
