Gears Of War: Reloaded Steam Reviews Reach “Mixed” Due To Bugs & Missing Features

Gears of War: Reloaded marked the series’ big debut on PlayStation, but the remaster’s simultaneous launch on PC is not going well. Reloaded is a remaster of Gears of War: Ultimate Edition, itself a remaster of the 2006 original that was released in 2015. The PS5 version of Reloaded runs quite well aside from a few inconsequential bugs, but that does not appear to be the case with the PC version.

At the time of writing, Gears of War: Reloaded has accrued 964 user reviews on Steam since it was released on August 26, with only 48% of those being positive, giving the game the storefront’s official “Mixed” categorization. The reviews cite poor performance, a variety of bugs, and regular crashes, but most consequential is the lack of split-screen support on PC, a feature that was advertised before launch.

Gears Of War: Reloaded Is Missing Split-Screen Co-Op & Preorder Items On PC

Split-Screen Was Scrubbed From The Steam Page

Gears of War: Reloaded‘s user reviews note that split-screen was a promised feature per the game’s advertising. This Reddit post from four months ago seems to confirm Steam listing “Shared/Split-Screen Co-op,” and, according to SteamDB‘s update history of Reloaded‘s Steam page, the trailer was swapped out, apparently to instead feature one that doesn’t include any mention of split-screen.

Even further, players are reporting that they did not receive their preorder bonuses on PC, in-game character skins to play Reloaded‘s multiplayer as Adam Fenix and Anya Stroud. Others have had issues even running the game, with reports of Reloaded entering a boot loop when changing certain settings. Those that have managed to play report a variety of other bugs, including issues with changing keybinds, crashes when trying to connect to the game’s servers, and more.

Microsoft Is Aware Of Issues With Gears Of War: Reloaded On PC

Hotfixes Are On The Way

On the evening of August 26, the day Reloaded was released, the official Gears Community social media account tweeted about some of the above issues. “The team is investigating crashes on Steam when launching the game and missing pre-order character skins for some users, as well as initial reports of matchmaking issues,” the post reads, followed by a link to a list of known issues on the Xbox Support website.

As of the evening of August 27, hotfixes were already being prepared for the crashes on PC and the missing preorder bonus skins. If you’re still experiencing issues, check for an update in your Steam client to see if a newer version of Gears of War: Reloaded can be downloaded.

That said, there seems to be no acknowledgment from Microsoft or developer The Coalition on the missing split-screen functionality for PC. It’s a pretty blatant case of false advertising, and many players seem to have preordered the game based on the inclusion of local co-op. Bug and crash fixes are already rolling out for Gears of War: Reloaded on PC, but it’s unclear if this major missing feature will be added.
