Hallmark star Tyler Hynes has skyrocketed in popularity in recent years, and it’s easy to see why. Beyond his talent as an actor, he’s also recognized for his genuine kindness and appreciation for his fans.
Earlier in February, Hynes returned to Missouri to give “free hugs” to Kansas City Chiefs fans after the Super Bowl loss. And for Valentine’s Day, he hosted two live events online so no fan would have to spend the holiday alone. In November, Hallmark star Andrew Walker shared a story about how Hynes swapped his business class ticket for a fan’s regular airplane ticket, and sat with her daughters as they all flew to Christmas Con.
The appreciation is mutual. Back in May 2022, fans surprised Hynes by donating to a scholarship in his name that gave some students a chance to attend a summer drama camp held by the Young People’s Theater in Toronto.
But of course, all of these stories wouldn’t be possible without Hynes’ Hallmark movies. He’s made a number of impressive films over the years. Here’s a look at our pick for Tyler Hynes’ Top 5 Hallmark movies.
1. ‘Three Wise Men & a Baby’
It’s no surprise that “Three Wise Men & a Baby,” starring Hynes, Walker and Paul Campbell, makes the list. The movie was such a big hit, its 2022 premiere broke a Hallmark viewing record for same-day, live viewing dating all the way back to 2019. It premiered with 3.626 million same-day viewers, even better than Hallmark’s first “The Wedding Veil” movie. Hallmark also shared in a press release that the film was the “most-watched movie of the year across the ad-supported cable spectrum in all key demographics.”
The movie also stood out for its focus on humor instead of romance, and for having three lead male characters with their own unique stories.
And for a bit of fun trivia: the film’s trademark viral dance (which fans still talk about today), was originally going to be very different from how it turned out.
2. ‘Holiday Touchdown: A Chiefs Love Story’
Next up is “Holiday Touchdown: A Chiefs Love Story” starring Hynes and Hunter King. This movie doesn’t just make the list because the author of this article is a Chiefs fan. It’s also making the list because it was a genuinely enjoyable film that broke a lot of ground for Hallmark. (It marked the first time the network partnered with the NFL, and was preceded by some major fan events in Kansas City.)
The movie also boasted a lot of special guests, from Donna Kelce to Catrick Mahomes, the celebrity cat.
The film was the number one most-watched movie of the year, according to Hallmark’s press statement.
In a discussion about the film in a public Hallmark fans Facebook group, one fan explained why they love the movie so much and think it’s a must-watch for anyone, Chiefs fans or not. They wrote: “It had a cute and different message, the romance between the fan and Chiefs employee (not football player) was not the focus, and it was nice to see the couple enjoy being together during the story instead of just figuring it out at the end…”
One person replied, “I’m not a KC fan but I’m a football fan and I loved the move. The actors as well as the football theme.”
Another person wrote, “I really enjoyed the family, multi generational interaction. When she turned to her grandfather and said “Et tu, Grampa” I cracked up. I liked that she took the family’s interest in her love life with a grain of salt. I’ve watched it three times now and still catch more every time! It’s a keeper! And then there’s Tyler. 🥰”
3. ‘It Was Always You’
The 2021 Hallmark film “It Was Always You,” starring Hynes and Erin Krakow, was a surprise hit that fans still talk about to this day. The sweet film showcased amazing chemistry between Hynes and Krakow — chemistry that has left fans clamoring for a sequel or another collaboration between the two stars.
Back in 2023, Krakow shared that she and Hynes would still love to make a sequel.
In a discussion about the film in a public Hallmark fans Facebook group, one fan shared that their favorite line in the film is: “I loved you yesterday, I love you today, I will love you tomorrow.” The film’s theme of enduring love resonated with fans.
One fan agreed about the line, replying: “Nobody could have said them like Tyler Hynes did !!!”
Another fan wrote in the comments, “One of my favorites.love Tyler and Erin. Have watched it every time it is on.”
4. ‘An Unexpected Christmas’
“An Unexpected Christmas” still ranks among fans’ favorites, even though it dates back to 2021. The “unexpected” hit marks the movie as a favorite to this day.
Co-starring Bethany Joy Lenz, the film featured a favorite Hallmark trope: an ex-boyfriend agreeing to pretend that he and his ex-girlfriend are still a couple to help save Christmas. Of course, the forced proximity causes the couple to fall in love all over again. Written by Paul Campbell, the movie has some great comedic moments mixed with Hallmark’s trademark warmth.
Hynes told Southern Living about his character: “Jamie is like this guy who is just a dunce. He’s just messing it all up That’s the power of this character. Hopefully we’re rooting for him. Because we’re all human beings and as much as we want to escape and imagine some very handsome, Henley wearing guy is gonna sweep us all off our feet. It ain’t looking like that in real life. So, you need the Jamies of the world to be like okay, Jamie exists and he’s just as romantic. And in my opinion. My personal opinion, this is where the true romance is. People who are too slick and too shiny, they’re the really dangerous ones.”
In a discussion about the film in a public Hallmark fans Facebook group, fans shared why they love it so much. One person wrote, “Tyler Hynes usually plays such a self-assured, wise-cracking character. Nice to see him play a different role.”
Another fan wrote, “I love Bethany Joy Lenz and all of her movies! And Tyler Hynes is my favorite male hallmark actor. Perfect combo! I wish they would do more movies together!”
Another person commented, “I love when she slapped the cookie out of his hand. I laughed for so long I had to rewind it.”
5. ‘Sweet Carolina’
Picking the last movie is tough because any of Hynes’ films could easily deserve making the cut. But we’re choosing “Sweet Carolina” because it tackles a different, more somber topic while still featuring Hallmark’s trademark warmth and romance. And of course, any collaboration with Hynes and Lacey Chabert is going to be good.
The 2021 film tackles a tough storyline: Chabert’s character Josie returns home when she becomes the guardian of her niece and nephew after their parents died. The movie came out shortly before Chabert lost her own sister unexpectedly.
Chabert said about the movie’s serious topic: “I did a movie called ‘Sweet Carolina,’ where my character’s sister suddenly passes, and she finds out she’s the guardian of her niece and nephew. That was something deeper I had been wanting to do for a while. A more emotional story, if you will.”
In a discussion about the film in a public Hallmark fans Facebook group, fans talked about why they love the movie so much. One person wrote, “Love this movie. These are two of my favorite Hallmark actors!!!!”
Another fan commented, “This one is always on my favorite list of Hallmark movies. The story is so good. Watch it every time I can.”
“Beautiful portrayal of life’s trials and love’s triumph,” another wrote.
