Heartstopper Season 4 Renewal Gets Blunt Response From Star About The Show's Uncertain Future

With uncertainty about a season 4 renewal, Heartstopper star Kit Connor responds candidly about the show’s future. Connor is currently doing press for Warfare, the upcoming A24 film from co-directors Alex Garland and Ray Mendoza that releases in theaters on April 15. But even as he shares the screen with a number of rising young actors, questions remain about whether Connor will reprise his breakout role as Nick Nelson in Alice Oseman’s young adult drama Heartstopper. Despite the third installment debuting last October, Netflix has not confirmed the status of season 4.

Speaking with The Cut, Connor briefly touched on the future of Heartstopper and shared the sentiment that the show’s writing team would not want to be “making it just for the sake of making it.” In the quote below, Connor gives a blunt response about what it would look like if the series went on for too long and made a reference to Nick’s mother, played by Olivia Colman: “You don’t want to see Olivia Colman driving a 30-year-old Kit Connor to high school.”

Either Way, The End Is Near

If it’s renewed, it’s been confirmed that Heartstopper season 4 will be the show’s last. That has been weaved into the push to ensure that the acclaimed series will get one last farewell outing to say goodbye and honor the devoted fanbase that the YA adaptation of Oseman’s novels has built. Producers have said publicly that they are working hard with Netflix to ensure a renewal, but there’s been no confirmation about the series’ future.

In the Heartstopper season 3 finale, Nick and Charlie Spring (Joe Locke) contemplate their next chapters. That includes moving forward to university, which their characters do in the graphic novels. But there is a certain charm in the Netflix series ending, more or less, with the high school years. It would represent a time capsule for viewers that would be looked at with a great deal of fondness.

The Show Deserves A Proper Ending Either Way

It’s an interesting thought experiment. What would a revival look like with Charlie, Nick, and the rest of the Heartstopper characters in their late 20s and early 30s? There’d be questions about whether they all remained close or whether the largely sweet tone would shit to match the protagonists at a different point in their lives. It’s fun to imagine. But the goal right now is, hopefully, that the characters get to say their farewells in a proper and full season 4.
