Subhash K Jha Provides A Special SneekPeak Into Dangal.

  1. Is Dangal the best film  of the year? All things considered it probably is. More to the point,Dangal will probably be Aamir Khan’s biggest hit to date. It’s got the feel of a  family drama and the adrenaline rush of a sports film. The mix of parivar and khel-koodis heady steady and ready to rock and roll at the boxoffice. You really can’t miss this.
  2. Aamir’s bonding with his screen daughters is not just for the cameras. The two girls Fatima Sana Sheikh and Saniya Malhotra are now part of Aamir’s family for keeps. When we see them together on screen we forget they are playing characters. All we see is an adamant stubborn sometimes-annoying always-caring  father and his two hero-worshipping daughters who would rather not wake up at 4 am in the morning to do pushups. And would rather eat gol guppa than saag. Father permitting. Burp re burp!
  3. Interestingly this is Aamir’s first father-daughter film. He has played the doting over-protective father to a son  in his cousin Mansoor Khan’s Akele Hum Akele Tum.One of his  career’s best, though unoriginal(it was blatantly lifted from Kramer Versus Kramer). Dangal is an absolute original.
  4. Even  more interestingly this is Aamir’s fourth sports-based film of his career. Early in his career he did Dev Anand’s cricket film Awwal Number ( a disaster , the cinematic equivalent of a Tsunami) and then Ashutosh Gowariker’s historic Lagaan where Aamir played cricket in a dhoti. Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar(directed by Aamir’s cousin Mansoor) was about cycling. Now Dangal wrestles in the akhaada. And to think in real life Aamir is too lazy to even take a shower until forced to.
  5. There are absolutely no similarities to Sultan except the wrestling background. Sultan focused on the love story between two wrestlers, one of whom happened to be a woman and the other [tooltip id=”88b6af99531f838ed90aed058b7d870a”][tooltip id=”c1b465420d07c688942ed18eadfd9f92″ keyword_color=”#000000″ background_color=”#ffffff”][tooltip id=”4db8f5608d45f5de7881d9bce162f4bf”]Salman Khan[/tooltip][/tooltip][/tooltip]. Dangal is the story of a father who yearns to take his daughters to Olympian heights.
  6. Aamir and Sakshi Tanwar are the new poster-couple of  Enlightened Rural India. I can see parents in the villages rushing to enrol their daughters into kabbadi, kushkti and karate classes.Sakshi and Aamir look so comfortably married in the film that we wonder why no one thought of casting them together before. This is the kind of marriage where the unspoken word is often a better substitute to the spoken.
  7. Fatima and Saniya who play sisters don’t  fake it. Their kinship is layered by a sincere sisterhood. The trickiest transition for the two daughters’ roles  was from adolescence to adulthood. The two sets of actresses not only had to look like sisters, they also had to look physically convincing as the same characters in two different stages of their lives.Dangal pulls off the physicality with  admirable ease and fluency.Thiis a film where everything falls miraculously into place.
  8. The Haryanvi milieu and accent are never overstated. We are never watching actors ATTEMPTING accents. Or a director brute-forcing us into looking at Haryana’s muddy milieu and dusty destiny . There is an unstrained flow , natural rhythm and steady  graph to the narrative that precludes any shred of artifice from the content.
  9. Pritam’s music doesn’t make unwanted guest appearances. The songs come on as rumbustious ratifications of the rugged drama and endearing emotions that rub shoulders in the screenplay like two uneasy compatriots who have to occupy the same room until the heat and dust outside settles down.
  10. Is this Aamir Khan’s best performance to date? In terms of plunging into character, yes. He is so much the wrestler Phogat that we forgive him for that weird and embarrassing performance in

Peekay
