Netflix’s Outer Banks will soon come to an end, but Hulu is developing a new show that could work as a suitable replacement. Debuting in April 2020, from co-creators Josh Pate, Jonas Pate, and Shannon Burke, Outer Banks began by introducing viewers to the Kooks and the Pouges — two conflicting groups of teenagers in search of lost treasure.
Half a decade later, the adventure drama series is one of Netflix’s most reliable hits. The fourth season was watched for more than a billion minutes in its debut week alone, taking the second spot in Nielsen’s Streaming Top 10 Charts. But with Outer Banks season 5 confirmed to be the show’s farewell outing, a new adaptation could help to fill the void.
Deadline reports that Hulu is developing a TV adaptation of The Summer of Songebirds, the best-selling novel by Kristy Woodson Harvey. The story revolves around the power of forged family, focusing on three girlfriends and the bond they forged in their childhood summers spent in North Carolina.
But now in their 30s, the trio grapple with the harsh realities of being adults. They also confront secrets and betrayals, both from the past and present, which threaten their seemingly unbreakable bond. The project hails from Brennan Peters, who previously worked as a co-producer and writer on the Prime Video sci-fi drama The Power. It hails from Aaron Kaplan’s Kapital Entertainment and 20th Television.
What The New Hulu Show Means For Outer Banks Fans
Hulu nabbed The Summer of Songbirds in what’s described as a competitive situation, according to the reporting, which means that there were a number of interested platforms. The comparisons to Outer Banks are there both in its beachy setting and in the theme of found family. Both of those elements may well appeal to viewers looking for something new to watch.
Outer Banks season 5 does not have an announced release date.
As one of the more consistent successes on Netflix, the Outer Banks cast features several breakout stars. They include Chase Stokes, Madelyn Cline, Madison Bailey, Jonathan Daviss, Rudy Pankow, and Drew Starkey. All have gone on to star in a variety of movies, whether it’s Cline’s recent role in the I Know What You Did Last Summer follow-up or Starkey co-leading the Luca Guadagnino film Queer.
The Summer of Songbirds is executive produced by Peters alongside Harvey and Kaplan, with Tiffany Przybyla Wong and Jaiden Kaplan as co-executive producers. It may not move past the developmental stage at Hulu, albeit it is an example of a show we’ve been seeing a lot of recently. It may have the same effect on this new cast, especially if there are different timelines in the adapted version.
Our Take On The Summer Of Songbirds
The new Hulu show sounds a lot like Prime Video’s We Were Liars, a recently released series that was also adapted from a novel. They share in the beach setting, the ruinous secrets, and found family.
Viewers are likely to see a lot of the same themes and variations on what has worked in other contexts. For fans of Outer Banks, a replacement won’t be easy. But there will be a lot of options.
