I'm Not Buying Voit's Story Twist In Criminal Minds: Evolution Season 3, And I Have Proof To Back It Up
Warning: SPOILERS for Criminal Minds: Evolution season 3, episode 9.Criminal Minds: Evolution season 3 is nearly done, but I’m convinced the crime drama has one last twist in store for its main antagonist. There have been many terrifying unsubs in Criminal Minds since the procedural’s 2005 premiere, but one prolific killer has been at the forefront of the reboot since 2022: Elias Voit (Zach Gilford), also known as Sicarius.
Voit has been a thorn in the side of the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit since the first episode of Criminal Minds: Evolution, but the killer took a particularly vested interest in David Rossi (Joe Mantegna), Jennifer “JJ” Jareau (A.J. Cook), and Tyler Green (Ryan-James Hatanaka). Since Criminal Minds: Evolution season 3 began, however, Voit has been a new man.

Following season 2’s cliffhanger where Voit was attacked by fellow inmates in prison, the Sicarius killer was in a coma at the start of Criminal Minds: Evolution season 3. He quickly woke up, but the storyline only grew more complicated with the reveal that Voit had no recollection of his identity or criminal past.

Emily Prentiss has always been one of Criminal Minds: Evolution’s main voices, but one line from season 3, episode 8 reflects its biggest issue.
Voit’s complex amnesia in Criminal Minds: Evolution season 3 slowly waned, but the killer was still wildly different. As Dr. Julia Ochoa (Aimee Garcia) realized, the empathy center in Voit’s brain became functional after his injury, meaning the twisted killer was no longer a psychopath. Astonishingly, Voit has allegedly been filled with remorse and compassion since awakening from his coma.

The Killer’s True Self Returns On A Prison Bus
Despite his apparent new lease on life, Criminal Minds: Evolution has spoiled Voit’s fate, and it seems as though the killer instinct isn’t gone for good. Although Voit has been contrite all season, the trailer for Criminal Minds: Evolution season 3 included a clip of the Sicarius killer being recognized on a prison bus and beginning to strangle someone.
The trailer doesn’t establish whether Voit is truly trying to murder the inmate, but the intention wouldn’t change the fact that Voit is actively harming another human being again. Regardless of how differently the character has acted in Criminal Minds: Evolution season 3, the prison bus scene confirms that Voit’s violent urges (and, by implication, his psychopathy) are inevitable.
How Can Criminal Minds: Evolution Explain Voit’s Fake Redemption
Voit May Have An Entirely New Stressor
There are often big twists and curveballs in Criminal Minds: Evolution, so it won’t be a total surprise if something major happens that triggers Voit and reawakens the killer within him. Whatever happens with the Sicarius network and the Disciple could become Voit’s new stressor, overriding his empathy and allowing his body to act on its violent muscle memory.

Even still, members of the BAU have expressed skepticism regarding Voit’s amnesia and theorized all season that he’s been completely faking his new self. However, like Ochoa herself said, there’s no way to fake the brain scans and numerous tests they conducted that proved Voit felt empathy. Nonetheless, Voit’s fall from grace in Criminal Minds: Evolution season 3 is imminent.
