It’s been almost twenty years since Jake Gyllenhaal earned his first and only Oscar nomination for his work in Brokeback Mountain with Heath Ledger, but a more recent project that earned him recognition from the Television Academy is surging on streaming charts. Gyllenhaal stars alongside Ruth Negga and Bill Camp in Presumed Innocent, the 2024 legal thriller following Chicago’s Prosecuting Attorney whose life is turned upside down when a member of his office is accused of a horrible crime. Despite airing its first season over a year ago, Presumed Innocent is still one of the most popular shows on Apple TV+, charting in the top 10 in several countries.
Presumed Innocent is actually a remake of Harrison Ford’s 1990 legal thriller film of the same name, which is based on the novel by Scott Turow. Frank Pierson and Alan J. Pakula wrote the script for the 1990 film, with Pakula also directing. David E. Kelley is the creator of Gyllenhaal’s hit Apple TV+ series, with Turow also earning another writing credit for his work on the novel. Elizabeth Marvel, who has been playing Rita Calhoun for 15 years on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, also has a role in Presumed Innocent.
Presumed Innocent was mostly well-liked by critics and audiences. The series earned a score of 79% from the former and 77% from the latter on Rotten Tomatoes — it’s not common for reviewers and fans to be this in line with any project. This critics’ score is lower than the 86% held by Ford’s 1990 film, but audiences rated Gyllenhaal’s series higher, by 10% — Presumed Innocent (1990) earned a 67% on the audience-driven Popcornmeter.
What Do We Know About ‘Presumed Innocent’ Season 2?
Presumed Innocent has been renewed for a second season, which is expected to air on Apple TV+ sometime next year. Rachel Brosnahan, who recently set the world on fire with her commanding performance as Lois Lane in Superman, will lead the second season of Presumed Innocent as Leila Reynolds. Brosnahan is no stranger to TV, either. She’s known for her Emmy-winning role in the hit Prime Video series, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Jake Gyllenhaal is not expected back in Presumed Innocent Season 2, which will likely consist of an entirely new cast. He is expected to remain involved as a producer in Season 2, though.
