Jason Statham’s upcoming action thriller Mutiny will bring back an element of Statham’s most recent box office hit that contributed to its success both with critics and audiences. From director Jean-François Richet, Mutiny stars Annabelle Wallis (Peaky Blinders) opposite Statham, along with Jason Wong and Roland Møller in key roles.
Jason Statham has always thrived in a very specific type of action movie, and from what we know about Mutiny, it seems like he will be right in his comfort zone yet again. Mutiny is set to feature Statham as a former Special Forces soldier who is framed for the murder of a wealthy friend, and uncovers an international conspiracy in his hunt for vengeance.
This type of formulaic action thriller is certainly still enjoyable with capable direction, writing, and fight choreography, and nobody plays the role better than Statham. However, there is one specific element that’s consistent with Statham and David Ayer’s 2024 hit The Beekeeper that should help Mutiny be a box office hit.

Jason Statham’s last action thriller, 2025’s A Working Man, was based on the 2014 novel Levon’s Trade, which is the first of a series of books starring the character Levon Cade, who is played by Statham in the movie. With middling reviews, a misguided release date, and a by-the-book (literally and figuratively) story development, A Working Man only made a little over twice its budget.

However, like The Beekeeper, Mutiny boasts a completely original story. While only limited plot details are available so far, we know that there is no source material for Mutiny. It was crafted as an original screenplay by writers Lindsay Michel and J.P. Davis, and could be the first big hit for either writer if they manage to bring something new and exciting to the table.
Mutiny Has A Lot In Common With The Beekeeper, Even If It’s An Original Story
Statham’s Character And Motivation Are Pretty Similar
Mutiny might be an original story, but even the limited plot summary that’s available reveals some striking similarities between the upcoming 2026 release and The Beekeeper. Statham’s character in both stories is a former special operative for the military, which is almost an assumption you can make whenever Statham shows up on screen at this point.
Just as he was at the beginning of The Beekeeper, he will be framed for a friend’s murder, and his quest for justice will drive the action. It’s too early to know if there is any sort of deeper, John Wick-esque world-building like how The Beekeeper established the Beekeeper covert intelligence agency, but either way, Mutiny seems to be hitting a lot of the same notes.
