Jun Ji Hyun's ads face the consequences of the 'Tempest' controversy in China

Jun Ji Hyun is facing backlash because of the controversy over her current K-drama, Tempest.

In the latest episode of Tempest that aired last weekend, Chinese netizens were angered by a line delivered by Jun Ji Hyun’s character, Seo Mun Ju. She said, “Why does China prefer war? A nuclear bomb could fall on the border.” This line drew heavy criticism from Chinese viewers, who stated that China seeks peace and does not prefer war. One comment even said, “If China really liked war, you wouldn’t even be able to film a drama here.”

There have also been criticisms regarding the filming locations for the K-drama. Some scenes meant to represent the Chinese city of Dalian were reportedly filmed in a run-down Hong Kong, with the production team using a dark tone that many viewers felt damaged Dalian’s image. This has led to widespread calls for a boycott of both the K-drama and Jun Ji Hyun.

Due to the criticism, some brands that use Jun Ji Hyun as a model have reportedly taken action by removing her advertisements in China. Brands such as Louis Vuitton, La Mer, and Piaget are said to have pulled their ads featuring the actress.

Disney+ and other streaming services are not officially available in China. The show can only be watched there through unofficial means, such as using VPNs or other alternative services.

Jun Ji Hyun is one of the most famous Korean actresses in China, a status she has maintained since her fame skyrocketed with the 2013 K-drama My Love from the Star.

Meanwhile, Tempest will air their 6th and 7th episodes on September 24.

Aside from Jun Ji Hyun, the K-drama stars Kang Dong Won, John Cho, Lee Mi Sook, Park Hae Joon, Kim Hae Sook, and more.

After Tempest, Jun Ji Hyun will greet viewers through her comeback film Colony with Koo Kyo Hwan, Ji Chang Wook, Kim Shin Rok, Shin Hyun Been, and Go Soo
