Katy Perry‘s romance with Justin Trudeau has turned into a bigger deal than she ever anticipated.
The surprising couple first emerged in July while she was on her Lifetimes Tour in Canada. The former prime minister not only wooed her with dinner, but he also attended her concert as an admiring fan. Now, the long-distance duo is finding a way to make their relationship a priority — and it’s Trudeau leading the way.
“Justin keeps making a big effort to see her, and she’s excited about it,” an insider told People. “It’s exactly what she needs right now.”

While Perry is having “a lot of fun with him,” not everyone is exactly thrilled about the relationship. Trudeau’s ex-wife Sophie Grégoire revealed on the Nov. 12 episode of the Arlene Is Alone podcast that it’s difficult to navigate her ex-husband’s very public romance.
“You know, we’re human beings and stuff affects us. Normal,” she admitted. “How you react to stuff is your decision. So, I choose to try to listen to the music instead of the noise.”
Grégoire shared that she is “very aware that a lot of public stuff out there can be triggers.”
“What I do with it is my decision. The woman I want to become through this is my decision,” she explained. “I’ll let myself be disappointed by someone, I’ll let myself be angry, be sad, and I know for a fact how important it is, as a mental health advocate, to feel those emotions.”
It isn’t easy when a partner moves on after a divorce, especially when a second insider told People that Trudeau is making a “real effort to meet her where she is.” They added, “He’s shown that he’s committed and really cares about spending time with her. It’s clear that he values the connection, and so does Katy. She’s in a great place.”
Perry broke up with fiancé Orlando Bloom in June; they share daughter, Daisy, 5. Trudeau and Grégoire officially separated in August 2023. They share three children: Xavier, 18, Ella-Grace, 16, and Hadrien, 11.
