The lyrics of Kaifi Azmi from Waqt ne kiya kya haseen situm (Kagaz Ke Phool) to Tu kahaan aa gayi zindagi(Bhavna) are as timeless as they are opportune and relevant to these times of decadence.
On Saturday 14 January when the Azmi family celebrates the late and great poet-thinker’s 98th birthday his residence in Janki Kutir(Juhu in Mumbai) will host a musical evening where some of the most well-known singers of the land will sing Kaifi Azmi’s most beloved lyrics.
Proud daughter Shabana Azmi says, “Every nook and corner of Kaifi and Shaukat’s 25Janki Kutir is replete with memories of evenings spent with the all-time great artists from film theatre music and poetry. This is my brother Baba’s tribute to Abba and a beautiful opportunity for young artists.”
The evening will see performances by music directors Annu Malik, Lalit Pandit , Raju Singh and singers Sunidhi Chauhan ,Alka Yagnik, Hariharan, Roop Kumar & SonaliRathod ,Talat Aziz among others, who will be joined for the musical evening by new budding singers to play a tribute to one of the greatest poet-lyricists of Hindi cinema.
Says Shabana happily, “ It will an open house and a big squeeze at the cosy JankiKutir where my parents raised me and my brother. But everyone will be happy to squat on gaddas and snack on cutting chai and vada pav. It will be a deeply emotional evening for the family.”
