Right now, the Indian movie industry seems sharply divided on whether to release films on the OTT platform ,the movie theatres , or both.
Many recent movies that have gone into theatres have bombed by being on the wrong platform. Most trade experts feel that recent theatre releases like Jersey, Jayesh Jordaar and Runway 34 would have fared much better had they been released straight on the digital platform.
Keeping in mind move the fluid state of the movie business Karan Johar has drawn up a suitably inconclusive contract with Disney + Hotstar for his underproduction Akshay Kumar-Emran Hashmi starrer Selfiee.
A source close to the project reveals, “Considering the state of flux that the movie industry finds itself in right now, Karan has kept the release format for Selfie undecided . Once the film is complete only then would Disney+Hotstar and Karan Johar take a call on whether to release it directly on digital or in movie theatres followed by a digital release.”
