There is much more to the Tamil star-actor Karthi than his brother Suriya. Though Karthi is currently wrapping up work on his “family film”, as he jokingly calls Kadiakutty Singam as it is produced by his brother, Karthi is looking at a lighter happier space in his next project.
“It is a film called Dev . It’s being directed by a new name Rajath Ravishankar. It’s a role and film completely freed of complications. It’s a lighthearted frothy love story with Rakul Preet Singh as my leading lady. I haven’t done too many such films,” says Karthi whose last release Theeran Adhigaaram Ondru also co-starred Rakul
“But that was a completely different world and a totally different theme and mood. The one thing that I’ve learnt from my brother and from my mentor actor Sathyaraaj is to ensure I don’t repeat myself. My films may or may not work. But I’ll make sure no one accuses me of doing the same thing twice,” promises Karthi.
Though Karthi’s collaboration with Mani Ratnam in Katru Veliyadai failed and his performance was panned by many critics, the actor is proud of it. “I tried a different kind of acting. I was playing a character completely different from the person that I am. Mani Sir and I decided on how I’d approach this complex man. Unfortunately in the editing, in order to keep the running-time compact, a lot of my scenes were taken out.My behaviour at several points seemed incongruous because the scenes explaining why I was behaving the way I was, were edited out. Having said that , I’m very proud of what we did in the film. Mani Ratnam?Any time again.”
Interestingly Karthi’s big period film Kashmora is a big success in Hindi .
“I saw the Hindi version and I really liked it. Maybe because I didn’t understand what I was saying,” the actor laughs.
He is also getting many offers from Telugu cinema. “And very good ones at that. But so far I haven’t found the time to take it up. Very soon, a Telugu film will happen.”
