I’ve known Katrina from the before she was a woman madly in love…much before. When she had newly arrived in Bollywood she had sought out my number to make a courtesy call. I warmed up to her because she made no effort to be extra-courteous or , worse, unctuous. I found her very sensible sorted and practical.
Katrina is a gentle soul. But also a girl with her head firmly on her shoulders.
Most importantly, for a girl as beautiful as Katrina she is far more intelligent than she looks but has to constantly scale down her intelligence to not pose any threat to the male egos that she encounters day in and day out in the film industry. I’ve had long conversations with Katrina when she was not so much in love. I like her smooth transitions in life and every day conversations. Katrina can make the biggest of obstacles seem worth negotiating.
This was when we spoke. Then she got sucked away into the depths of love. It was like watching Superman fly off the precipice .Instead of up, this supergirl went down and down and down…That’s why it’s called falling in love(get it).She put herself behind her loved one, sublimated her ego and put the one thing that defined her identity—her career—on hold. She lost plum roles. But she couldn’t care less. She was what Barbra Streisand sang in that timeless ballad

He was older and apparently wiser . He was her guiding light. Ranbir was a friend first, a lover later. He made her laugh. He made her cry. He made her drop her defences and get swept in the tidal waves of love.
But somehow I always knew the relationship wouldn’t culminate in what she wanted. Marriage and babies. He had gone up that road several times, and turned back.Ranbir’s mother Neetu Singh had decided she would marry only Rishi Kapoor, or not marry at all. The Kapoor men are known to be hard nuts to crack. Perhaps Katrina didn’t wait it out long before. Perhaps she didn’t try hard enough to win over Ranbir’s parents.
She never spoke to anyone about her struggle to keep the relationshop going . In the past few years we drifted apart. She did make an effort for her boyfriend and I to be friends. But there was way too much mutual distrust to overcome.
Katrina simply went with whatever her man wanted.
But it wasn’t enough, I guess.
I don’t know how long it is going to take for her to heal.When she FELL in love she fell really hard. Knowing her ingrained dignity and strong sense of survival she will dust off the mud from her dress get up from from her fall and limp back to normalcy without anyone’s help.
She will focus on her career once again. Fitoor which opens in February would be her first post-hearbreak release. Some of the pain of unfulfilled love she will try to express on screen will be real. Madhuba did Mughal-e-Azam while suffering the anguish of a break up with Dilip Kumar.I am not comparing Katrina to Madhubala, please! But heartbreak will make Katrina a better actress.And a stronger woman.
