In 2016 an Indian child Neel Sethi took global cinema by storm. In 2017 another child actor from India Sunny Pawar kicks up a worldwide storm.
If some of the most acclaimed in recent months are anything to go by, then it looks like child actors are stealing the limelight from their older counterparts.
Indian child actors are going global with their cute virtuosity
Last year we had Neel Sethi wowing global audiences with his confident performance as Mowgli in The Jungle Book. There were other enormously significant films last year like Pete’s Dragon andBFG with child actors playing the central role.
This year it’s Sunny Pawar who steals the show from a stellar cast inLion that includes Nicole Kidman, Nawazuddin Siddiqui and RoonyMara. And it isn’t only Lion where Sunny makes such a huge impact. He’s back occupying centrestage in Tabrez Noorani’s Love Soniya .If little Sunny stole the show from Dev Patel in Lion it’s Freida Pinto whom Sunny gives a run for her money in Love Soniya.
In Logan which opens this week 9-year old Dafne Keen shares the lead with Hugh Jackman.
Resul Pookutty the sound designer of films with child actors at the helm like Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Black and Noorani’s Love Soniyasays, “In he US, kids were always a huge market, in animation etc. Walt Disney and Pixar made their fortunes with those kinds of cinema. But I never ever thought they would invest so much creative energy on live action kiddy stories. It’s only us in India who haven’t tapped that potential for making more films with kids in central roles.”
