Kim Hieora Reveals Life After School Bullying Scandal: “I Took My Deposit Money and Went to the U.S.”

Actress Kim Hieora opened up about how she coped during the difficult period following her school bullying controversy. In an interview with Sports Kyunghyang on October 23 in Seoul’s Palpan-dong, she spoke candidly about her state of mind and the choices she made at the time.

Comparing herself to her character Choonseo in the upcoming film Savior, Kim shared, “If Choonseo is someone who fights to protect what has been taken from her, I was the opposite someone who watched and accepted. Just as everyone’s life is built for their own reasons, I also thought deeply about what I had to do within the situation I was given.”

She recalled that acting was the only way she felt she could communicate: “All I could do was show through my acting. I couldn’t explain myself individually to each person. That’s why I think I left for the U.S. I took the deposit money from the place I was living in and went to America. Instead of lying in bed doing nothing, I felt I needed to do something anything.”

Kim stayed in the U.S. for a short period after the controversy, and the experience became a turning point. “I studied, had meetings in a language I wasn’t fluent in, and thought, ‘I guess I was given this time for a reason.’ It made me stronger. I met people who were going through much harder times than I was,” she said. “Before, I was someone who only ran toward my dreams. Now, I think I’ve become someone who can look around and see others, too.”

She also shared her thoughts on her role in Savior: “I told the director I didn’t want Choonseo to completely lose herself. I wanted her to be someone who could protect at least a small part of herself. Like my character, I, too, was fully immersed in the people I met through acting. Every line touched me. I was grateful for that time.”

Savior, featuring Kim Hieora, Song Ji Hyo, and Kim Byung Chul, follows a couple who move to the seemingly blessed village of Obok-ri, only to discover that the miracles they experience come at the cost of someone else’s misfortune. The mystery occult film will be released on November 5.
