Kim Soo Hyun vs. Advertisers: A Ten-Billion-Won Legal Battle Begins

If there’s one name that’s dominated entertainment headlines in South Korea this year, it’s Kim Soo Hyun. The acclaimed actor found himself at the center of a storm following allegations that he had been in a relationship with the late actress Kim Sae Ron when she was a minor. While Kim has firmly denied the claims, the controversy has now escalated into a series of high-stakes lawsuits against him by advertisers.

Recently, the Seoul Central District Court held the first hearing in a civil lawsuit filed by Cuckoo Electronics, Cuckoo Homesys, and Cuckoo Homesys’s Malaysian branch Cuckoo International Berhad, who are demanding over 2 billion KRW (~$1.5 million USD) in damages from Kim Soo Hyun and his agency, Gold Medalist.

The plaintiffs removed Kim’s advertisements following the allegations, citing potential harm to their brand image. They argue that the trust between them and the actor has been irreparably broken. However, the court asked them to clarify which specific breach of contract would justify the termination, emphasizing the need to determine whether Kim’s alleged behavior constitutes a clear fault.

The court also noted that the allegation is still under investigation. Cuckoo’s legal team argued, however, that the civil suit can proceed independently of the ongoing criminal investigation.

The next hearing is scheduled for January 16, 2026.

Kim Soo Hyun is facing a growing legal quagmire. Multiple companies he previously endorsed have reportedly filed damage claims totaling around 7.3 billion KRW ($5.5 million USD). One medical device company even obtained a provisional seizure of Kim’s luxury apartment in Galleria Foret, with a claim estimated at 3 billion KRW ($2.25 million USD).

Cuckoo Electronics is the first to bring the case to court, but industry insiders believe it could set a precedent for the other pending lawsuits. “Everyone’s watching this case closely because it could influence how the rest proceed,” said one source.

Kim Soo-hyun Knock Off controversy

The controversy hasn’t just impacted Kim’s commercial deals. He was in the midst of filming Disney+’s original series “Knock-Off” when the scandal broke. While the show was initially expected to premiere this year, production and release have been indefinitely delayed. Disney+ recently unveiled its 2026 content lineup, but “Knock-Off” was notably absent.

A source close to the matter revealed, “Kim Soo Hyun is eager for a swift resolution. His comeback depends on it.” As of now, no conclusions have been reached regarding the allegations or lawsuits, delaying not only Kim’s career trajectory but also associated productions and business interests.

Kim’s legal team continues to firmly refute the claims, even suggesting that the alleged audio recording involving the late Kim Sae Ron was manipulated using AI. They have demanded a forensic analysis to determine its authenticity, hoping to resolve the issue swiftly.

With public interest high and the stakes growing larger, all eyes are on how this legal and reputational battle will unfold and what it will mean for one of Korea’s top actors moving forward.
