Kimberly Williams-Paisley Reveals the Wild Reason She Wound Up With Her Famous Husband

One of the most beautiful love stories in the entertainment industry is one rooted in both music and film. Kimberly Williams-Paisley and Brad Paisley first met in 2001 when the country star invited her to appear in his music video for “I’m Gonna Miss Her” (“The Fishin’ Song”). The rest was history!
But did you know Paisley was already a big fan of Williams after seeing her in the 1991 hit “Father of the Bride”? Even more surprising, he saw the movie with his ex-girlfriend. Talk about a plot twist, right?
After the breakup, the “Whiskey Lullaby” singer watched the film again on his own and felt compelled to reach out to Williams-Paisley years later. They eventually met, felt the sparks, and married on March 15, 2003. The couple now shares two sons, William Huckleberry, born in 2007, and Jasper Warren, born in 2009.
But, believe it or not, there is more to this love story.
A Love Story Worth the Wait
Recently, Williams-Paisley opened up about their romance on the podcast “Sibling Revelry with Kate Hudson and Oliver Hudson.”
“It was, like, their movie, and then he moved to Nashville, and she broke his heart,” Williams-Paisley told the siblings. She explained that Brad loved the movie so much that after the breakup, he went to see the sequel in theaters. He was basically hoping his ex would show up and they’d reconnect.
“It was really kind of cute and romantic and maybe naive,” she said. “So he went to the same theater where they had their first date, thinking, ‘If she thinks about it the way I’m thinking about it, she’ll also show up to the sequel.’ So he stayed and watched the movie, but she didn’t show up.”
Heartbroken but driven, Paisley moved to Nashville after no luck, which turned out to be a move that changed his life. This is considering the major success that followed, becoming one of the best country music artists in the industry, who has gained almost 20 number-one singles.
Still, the movie holds a very deep meaning for him to this day. Williams-Paisley revealed he even kept the ticket stub from the sequel and later used it as artwork for his second album.
Reflecting on the story, Kimberly joked, “He woke up with this idea, like, ‘Oh, I should call that girl who was in “Father of the Bride,” and that’s the story he goes with. But I’m like, maybe he was stalking me somehow?”

Of course, she didn’t seriously believe that, especially since he invited her to star in his music video. “I wasn’t expecting a country music video, but he literally called a few days later and I was like, ‘Yeah, that sounds fun.’”
Fun fact: they had already started dating before the video came to life. Two months into their relationship, she asked him what happened to the video footage. “We had already been dating for two months, and I was like, ‘Whatever happened to that video that you wanted me to do?’ So, I finally did a video with him [for his song ‘I’m Gonna Miss Her’], but it took some time.”
The couple has always been open about what makes their marriage work and why they work hard for their love. One major factor? Humor.
Speaking with The Boot, Paisley shared, “Anything I take myself too seriously on, she will gladly cut me down to size and destroy all preconceived notions that I’m cool in any way. You’ve got to have similar outlooks and really healthy senses of humor. Pretension should be completely gone in a marriage. Actually, it should be gone before you get married! You should know somebody really well and know that they know how to take a joke and they know how to take you. That’s the key — a sense of humor.”
Safe to say, this fairytale 22-year marriage just keeps getting better year after year. We can’t wait to see what they do for their 25th anniversary.
