‘Lilo & Stitch’ Overtakes $200 Million DC Reboot and $250 Million Marvel Sequel at the Box Office

Having completed nearly a month of release in theaters worldwide, Disney’s Lilo & Stitch remake has emerged as the second-biggest Hollywood hit of the year so far. It’s now also among the 100 highest-grossing films ever made, and, during the course of its run, has overtaken a host of memorable hits. Most recently, Lilo & Stitch passed a $200 million DC superhero blockbuster, and an even more expensive sequel belonging to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Lilo & Stitch is poised to become Disney’s first billion-dollar hit since Moana 2 last year.

The film’s running domestic haul stands at $371 million so far, while its global total stands at $864 million. Lilo & Stitch has now passed the $369 million lifetime domestic haul of Matt Reeves‘ 2022 hit The Batman, starring Robert Pattinson in the titular role. It has also overtaken the $859 million lifetime global haul of Ryan Coogler‘s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, his sequel to the landmark 2018 hit, Black Panther. These are major titles, and for Lilo & Stitch to beat them is no mean feat. Produced on a reported budget of $100 million, it cost roughly half as much as the $200 million The Batman, and even less than the $250 million Wakanda Forever.

It is, however, the lowest-rated movie of the trio on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes. Lilo & Stitch holds a 71% score on the website, while The Batman and Wakanda Forever are sitting on 85% and 84% RT scores. Directed by Dean Fleischer Camp, Lilo & Stitch is the live-action remake of the original 2002 animated film, which was directed by Dean DeBlois and Chris Sanders. Live-action remakes of animated movies have been rather hit-or-miss in recent years, but with the back-to-back success of Lilo & Stitch and How to Train Your Dragon, the trend seems to have jumped back on its feet.

Sequels to Both ‘Wakanda Forever’ and ‘The Batman’ Are in the Works

Coogler is currently enjoying the success of his new film, Sinners, which has made over $370 million worldwide. He’s expected to direct a third Black Panther movie, which is set to feature Denzel Washington in a major role. Meanwhile, Reeves is still hard at work writing The Batman: Part II. DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn said recently that he’s expecting Reeves to turn in his script shortly. You can watch Lilo & Stitch in theaters, and stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
