Movie Review: What were they smoking when they made this film about four spiritual drifters, a quartet from nomad’s land, who take off on a road trip only to discover speed breakers in their own lives.

Initially from the format of the plot, and the youngsters’ holiday in the pristine hills and most specially the way the lead pair reacts to each other with hostility and  suspicion, M Cream loudly echoed Ayan Mukerjee’s Yeh JawaniHai Deewani.

But  then it all kind of settles down into a manageable muddle. These are young aimless characters who don’t know their minds. And Imaad Shah who plays an upperclass couple(Lushin Dubey and Tom Alter)’s spoilt aimless son with  Bob Marley hair, is very adept at playing a messed up stoned but still lucid young drifter who doesn’t know what he wants . But he does know that he doesn’t want what his upperclass life can afford.

This is not an entirely novel premise for an Indie outing. Writer-Director Agneya Singh keeps the tone real and believable. Imaad, Ira Dubey, Auritra Ghosh and Raghav Chanana extend their personalities into characters that seem to be written for them.

And that’s the biggest compliment one can pay to these young actors’ abilities to keep it real. While most of the actors do not betray the director’s vision(barring the redoubtable Barry John whose ‘American’ accent is a howl)  the director himself seems to be in pursuit of an existential truth that takes him through myriad themes and causes including the political strife in Tibet and the tree conservation.

Finally, the film moves so far away from where it starts that the protagonist has to ask aloud, ‘Are we done?’ before the film ends, leaving many questions unanswered.
