'M3GAN 2.0' Director Reveals Major Expansion of the 57% Rotten Tomatoes Horror Movie

M3GAN 2.0 entered theaters with mixed results, receiving a mediocre score from critics, and is currently struggling to match the box office numbers of its predecessor. However, despite its underperformance, M3GAN 2.0 director Gerard Johnstone revealed that the home video release of this latest slasher-horror will contain an uncut version.
In an interview with DiscussingFilm, Johnstone didn’t specify when or how the uncut version would be released. However, he did share that it will contain extra scenes that were not featured in the theatrical cut and how some factors, such as trailer production and marketing, may have affected what comes to the big screen. Hopefully, this news of additional content could boost M3GAN 2.0’s numbers in terms of home sales.
“There will be an unrated version with a few [extra] scenes. We pack a lot in… I get it, it’s a long time to sit in the theater. So, we really wanted the [theatrical cut] to be under two hours. However, in the unrated cut, you’ll see a few things that didn’t make it into the theatrical version. Also, there are many lines in the trailers that help tell the story, but M3GAN doesn’t say them in the film at all (laughs). The studio needed promotional material. Sometimes, the trailers were already made before we could decide, ‘Can this beat make it into the movie or not?’ But, in a way, it still informs the universe.”
Since its release, M3GAN 2.0 has underperformed at the box office, earning just over $22 million globally and falling short during its domestic opening weekend. Unlike the original film, which received a Certified Fresh score of 93% on Rotten Tomatoes, the sequel received a mediocre 57% from critics. However, audience reception tells a different story. M3GAN 2.0 has received an 82% audience score, surpassing the score of the first film, which was 78%. Prior to its release, the 4K and Blu-ray physical version of M3GAN 2.0 became available for pre-order, but has yet to announce a release date.
What Is ‘M3GAN 2.0’ About?
M3GAN 2.0 takes place two years after the first film, with Gemma (Allison Williams) now an advocate for AI regulation, and her niece Cady (Violet McGraw) interested in computer science. Despite M3GAN being destroyed in the first film, this rogue AI has returned, revealing that she survived by making a backup in Gemma’s smart home. M3GAN and co. offer to help after the FBI reveals the existence of AMELIA (Ivanna Sakhno), an AI military robot that’s out to get its creators.
One of the reasons why M3GAN 2.0 flopped was due to the direction the sequel took. It steered away from the horror and into the action. M3GAN 2.0 producer and Blumhouse CEO Jason Blum admitted that they thought “M3GAN was like Superman” and that they could do anything with her. Instead, people wanted the brutal M3GAN that they had been introduced to in the original.
M3GAN 2.0 is now showing in theaters.
