In the culmination of years of Hulk comics, Marvel just unleashed its first and greatest villain. Present at the beginning of the Marvel Universe and lurking behind the scenes for 86 years of stories, this villain is the true source of Hulk’s gamma radiation and the creator of every monster in Marvel lore. Now, fans finally get to see them unleashed…
Marvel Reveals the Mother of Horrors
Marvel’s First and Greatest Villain Is Finally Free
In Incredible Hulk #30 – from Phillip Kennedy Johnson, Nic Klein, Matt Wilson and Cory Petit – fans finally see the Mother of Horrors. This gigantic elder god was the first and only being not created by the One-Above-All, becoming a longtime enemy of Marvel’s supreme being. When they eventually fought, the Mother of Horrors even managed to wound the One-Above-All, corrupting his blood and bringing about the existence of the devilish One-Below-All.
The One-Above-All eventually banished the Mother of Horrors beyond reality, with the entirety of The Incredible Hulk Volume 7 leading up to her release. It finally happens because the Mother of Horrors’ ‘daughter’ Eldest has stolen Hulk’s body, using his strength and gamma to access her mother’s prison outside time and space. However, she finds the Mother of Horrors comatose from her long eons of isolation… and that’s when things get messed up.
The Infernal Hulk Is Becoming the New God of Monsters
Desperate to claim the powers of the Mother of Horrors, Eldest consumes her creator, taking the eldritch god’s gamma into her new Hulk form. The result is the birth of the Infernal Hulk, whose adventures will continue in a new series of the same name. The Mother of Horrors is the creator of all Marvel’s monsters and can command their minds, with Eldest channeling these powers in the past. Now, the Infernal Hulk will wander the Earth, hunting down Earth’s greatest monsters and forcing them to swear fealty to their new leader.
After 86 years, Marvel fans have now witnessed the earliest form of evil in the Marvel multiverse – one with ties to characters as diverse as Hulk, the Sentry, Ghost Rider and Dracula. If humanity fears it, its lineage traces back to the Mother of Horrors, making the opening of her prison/tomb one of the most consequential moments in Marvel lore.
The reveal of the Mother of Horrors and her consumption by the Infernal Hulk marks the beginning of this new Hulk’s quest to unleash a new age of monsters on Earth. Infernal Hulk will follow that quest, as the Avengers and a now-powerless Bruce Banner attempt to stop Eldest’s millennia-spanning plans from coming to fruition. It’s an epic and ambitious new era for the Hulk franchise, but opening the extradimensional prison of Marvel’s oldest and greatest villain could have unleashed nothing less.
