Michelle Williams Breaks Silence on Late Ex Heath Ledger

Although it’s been 17 years since Heath Ledger died, the Batman actor has not been forgotten. In a recent conversation with Dax Shepard on his Armchair Expert podcast, Michelle Williams reminisced about Ledger and how the sensitive, unique soul touched so many around him.

Shepard Recalls Time He “Fell in Love” With Late Actor Heath Ledger

“I feel obligated to say that I knew him a little bit when he was getting sober, and I don’t know that I’ve ever fallen in love with somebody so quickly,” Shephard said of Ledger. “This is one of the most special boys I’ve ever met, and I can feel the weight of the world on him in a very special way, that kind of broke my heart. I was very, very sad, and I thought he was just so special.”

“So special, so special, thank god there’s Matilida,” an emotional Williams agreed.

Yeah, what a guy,” Shepard continued. I feel very lucky that I just got to… There’s like a handful of people I’ve met like that in my life, where I’m just like, ‘Oh wow, there’s something, there’s just a heart here that’s just leaking out everywhere.’”

“Yeah, an incredible sensitivity,” Williams replied.

Williams Dishes on How Motherhood Shifts Her Perspective

Williams now has three children with husband Tony Kail; she recalls how much her outlook has changed from having her first child with Ledger, Matilda, to now.

“Kids are such great life checkers,” she said. “They force you to put your best self in front of them. You can’t abdicate your life and your work and your own desires, but you do have to put them in check and figure out which master you’re going to serve.”

Shepard asked how she felt going to the Academy Awards after being nominated for her breakthrough role in Brokeback Mountain. “Was that a natural transition?” he asked.

“No, we had a baby,” she said. “But I suppose maybe it’s a good thing about being young is that you don’t have so much life experience that you can contextualize things. So you’re really just going with the flow.”
