My Favorite Fantastic Four Easter Egg Needed Way More Screentime

We definitely needed some more screen time from my favorite Fantastic Four: First Steps Easter egg. Within the first few minutes of the latest MCU movie, audiences were treated to the perfect nod calling back to the original Marvel Comics.

Set in its own reality of Earth-828, Fantastic Four: First Steps is set in a retro-futuristic version of the 1960s, offering a fresh new take on the First Family’s origins, who’ve been active superheroes for four years by the time the movie starts.

However, the movie’s opening montage to their earliest exploits is easily one of the best parts of the movie, including the perfect Marvel Comics Easter egg.

For the most part, these new live-action Fantastic Four were shown wearing white-and-blue costumes as their signature look, with matching white-and-blue spacesuits, perfectly fitting in with the overall 60s aesthetic.

However, the ABC Special retrospective that opened the movie revealed The Fantastic Four’s original costumes during their earliest days, briefly appearing in their more classic black-and-blue suits inspired by the artwork of Marvel Comics’ Jack Kirby, who co-created the FF with Stan Lee.

These classic throwback uniforms appeared only twice in the montage: the first when the team fights Giganto as a recreation of Fantastic Four #1’s cover, and the second when they apprehend Mole Man following his attack on the Pan Am Building.

Unfortunately, both sequences were all too brief, while still offering a rare chance to see completely faithful costume adaptations from the original comics translated into live action.

It’s worth noting that there were further fun nods to Stan and Jack (including Timely Comics before its name change to Marvel). However, such a minimal use of the classic suits felt like a missed opportunity. One can imagine that there might have been more sequences with the OG costumes had the full montage not been shortened (perhaps in scenes featuring John Malkovich’s Red Ghost before he was cut from the movie entirely).

Will The Fantastic Four Have New Costumes In Avengers: Doomsday?

Looking forward, there has been some speculation about whether The Fantastic Four will receive updated suits when they return in 2026’s Avengers: Doomsday.

Perhaps the FF will transition away from their 60s-inspired looks to something more modern in present-day Earth-616. Likewise, there have already been rumors of new costumes sparked by images of wrap gifts given to Avengers: Doomsday’s crew, featuring new looks for the movie’s wide roster of heroes (including the First Family).

A visual costume upgrade makes sense, especially when looking at Marvel Studios’ history of changing costumes movie to movie. The FF moving from a more retro period to contemporary Earth-616 does open the door for some natural redesigns. The MCU rarely keeps a superhero suit unchanged for long (even when some would prefer otherwise).

At any rate, the black-and-blue Kirby suits were easily one of the best Easter eggs in Fantastic Four: First Steps, an excellent nod to their legacy both on-screen in the MCU and on the page.

Fantastic Four: First Steps is now streaming on Disney+. Avengers: Doomsday releases on December 18th, 2026, from Marvel Studios.
