My Girl 4K Review: Macaulay Culkin Movie Is Worth Revisiting

Published

on

While it’s mostly known for its gut-punch of an ending, the 1991 coming-of-age movie My Girl has a lot of charm to it. Featuring a stellar cast of child and adult leads — Dan Aykroyd, Jamie Lee Curtis, Macaulay Culkin, and Anna Chlumsky, the film has actually aged quite well. Plus, after nearly 35 years, maybe you’re up to go through the emotional rollercoaster ride that the My Girl 4K release provides.

“A coming-of-age comedy starring Dan Aykroyd, Jamie Lee Curtis, Macaulay Culkin (Home Alone), and newcomer Anna Chlumsky, My Girl is an irresistible story of first love and loss. Chlumsky makes an extraordinary acting debut as Vada Sultenfuss, a precocious 11-year-old tomboy obsessed with death. Dan Aykroyd is her widowed father, the town mortician, and Jamie Lee Curtis is the sexy cosmetician he employs. Macaulay Culkin, in another endearing performance, is Thomas J., the boy next door who idolizes Vada. Their summer adventures, from first kiss to last farewell, introduce Vada to the world of adolescence. The perfect film for parents to share with their children, My Girl is a motion picture to cherish,” says the synopsis.

In retrospect, it’s great to see how bright of a star Chlumsky was from the very start of her career. The Veep and Inventing Anna star has since been celebrated for her stellar television performances, but it’s a real joy seeing her and Culkin together in what is a very beautiful and touching story. Aykroyd and Curtis also give strong performances in this film that has aged gracefully and manages to be a great entry point for children to experience more serious films that deal with loss and growing up.

The My Girl 4K release looks nice with its Dolby Vision inclusion and nice black levels. While it’s not a visually stunning film by any means, it’s well shot, and director Howard Zieff lends a steady hand and ensures the story is told properly. The audio track is also of high quality, as you never struggle to understand the dialogue and can fully enjoy the film for what it is.

The My Girl 4K release features a collection of bonus features, with the audio commentary track featuring writer Laurice Elehwany being the main draw. Laurice covers everything from the film’s themes to the stellar casting of Chlumsky and Culkin, plus even goes into some changes made to the original script. It’s a really interesting track, and one any fan will get a lot of value out of. Additionally, there are 11 minutes of featurettes that give a nice little look at how the film was made and the original trailer.

My Girl 4K Review: Final Verdict

While I can’t say the ending is any less sad after all this time, it was great revisiting the 1991 film that showed just how bright a young talent Anna Chlumsky was. The My Girl 4K release is the best way to experience the emotional coming-of-age movie again and to share that with your own kids once it’s time. Just remember to skip the unnecessary sequel, which came out three years later and mostly lost the charm of what made the original such a sensation.
