Naruto Creator Finally Breaks Silence on Boruto's Polarizing Legacy: "It's Really Difficult"

It’s been almost a decade since Boruto: Naruto Next Generations started, and Naruto’s creator has finally spoken about why it’s so different. Late into Boruto’s run, it was announced that Kishimoto would take over as Boruto’s writer after previously just being in an advisory role, and since then, he’s often taken the brunt of the blame for Boruto’s biggest criticisms.

As easy as it is to blame Masashi Kishimoto for Boruto’s failings, that’s actually far from the truth. In a recent interview with Masashi Kishimoto and Boruto artist Mikio Ikemoto, Kishimoto said that, despite being billed as the writer, he’s still just an advisor, and Ikemoto is the one who’s really in charge of the story.

“Ikemoto is completely in charge of the story and main illustrations. Boruto really is Ikemoto’s manga.” – MASASHI KISHIMOTO

If anything, Masashi Kishimoto feels he made things difficult for Mikio Ikemoto by using all his best ideas in Naruto, and it paints a perfect picture of why Boruto: Naruto Next Generations often falls short of Naruto.
