Naseeruddin Shah will be finally discharged from hospital tomorrow

When I asked Naseeruddin Shah if he was being discharged from the hospital today as he had indicated earlier,Naseer Saab stated, “I am fine. Going home tomorrow(Monday).”

This is cause for joy and relief for his family wife Ratna, daughter Heeba, sons Imaad and Vivaan who have been consistently monitoring his health .

On June 30 when I had reached out to Naseeruddin Shah about his health, he had replied, “Patch on the lung, investigations on. Thanks for your good wishes.”

Last year during an interview with me Naseeruddin Shah had spoken about his need to control his temper and the growing intolerance in the country. On being asked if he would like to change anything in his personality Naseer Saab had replied,“I would consciously try to control my temper which runs away with me often .It’s a bad habit I would like to lose but apart from that I wouldn’t change a thing even if it was in my power to do so.”

Speaking of the growing intolerance he had said, “As a nation, we grow more intolerant .Even the lockdown has unlocked new waves of bigotry as Muslims are being blamed for the spread of the virus. We have to learn to cope with whatever life throws at us, but the fact is thoughts of mortality occur more frequently than they used to. To utter the word ‘intolerance’ in India has become blasphemous and moderate, liberal etc have become pejoratives. But what’s happening in the country is tragic and it angers me. IT DOES NOT SCARE ME as some people seem to derive pleasure from repeating. If the people fanning the flames had any idea what their provocations can lead to, maybe they would desist.”

Earlier , When Naseeruddin Shah was admitted to the hospital his manager informed media that, “Naseeruddin Shah has been in the hospital for two days. He’s under medical supervision. He was brought in for pneumonia. There was a patch found in his lungs and it became necessary for him to be hospitalised immediately. His condition is stable and he’s responding well to the treatment.”

Last year, Naseer’s son Vivaan Shah was forced to dismiss rumours of his father’s ill health. Vivaan wrote in a tweet on April 30, 2020, “All well everyone! Baba’s just fine. All the rumours about his health are fake. He’s keeping well. Praying for Irfan Bhai and Chintu ji. Missing them a lot. Deepest condolences to their families. Our hearts go out to all of them. It’s a devastating loss for all of us.”

The 70-year-old has covered almost all platforms in his career. He has appeared on the stage, has done commercial, signed critically acclaimed films, has led the front of the parallel film movement, and has also worked in streaming projects. Shah, who is a three-time National Award-winning actor, has been bestowed with the honourable Padma Shri and the Padma Bhushan by the Government of India.
