The word is out. This year at the 65th National film awards with a jury headed by Shekhar Kapur has decided to completely sideline Hindi and Bollywood cinema. Not a single major award has gone to any Hindi film, actor or filmmaker this year.
While the Jury’s decision will be officially announced later , I am happy to inform that the National Award for Best Film has gone to an Assamese film Village Rockstars scripted and directed by debutante Rima Das.
The film set in a remote village of Assam tells the story of a 10-year old girl Dhunu (Bhanita Das) who aspires to be a musician and dreams of owning a guitar. Interestingly the director Rima Das has no formal training in filmmaking.
Says a source close to the Jury, “This year the jury headed by Shekhar Kapur has recognized fresh talent from across India including a fabulous film from Laskshadweep. The best film, hands-down was Rima Das’s Village Rockstars.”
Amit Masurkar’s Newton has won the National award for Best Hindi film. The Best Actor and Best Actress awards have been gone for a Bengali and a Malayalam film, respectively.
