After an 8-year old stuggle with cancer, actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s youngest sibling Syamalost the battle. She breathed her last on 7 December, liberating herself from unbearable pain and suffering.
The thing about grave illnesses is that they affect the entire family profoundly. I remember when Nawaz first told me about his sister’s illness he was trying hard to keep it out of the public eye.
“It is something out of the blue. She’s just a child and the youngest in the family. I will do whatever it takes to cure her,” Nawaz had said, confiding that he had moved his precious sister to Pune for the best treatment and to keep her away from prying eyes.
Every time we spoke, I asked Nawaz about his sister. He once said, “It(the illness) is like a cloud covering all my success. Here I am going through a hard-earned phase of success. Every time I want to celebrate my success I remember that my baby sister is critically ill. It kills all my joy in life.”
Sadly when the end came for Syama, Nawaz was not in the country. I pray for the family to be strong in this hour of unimaginable grief.
Nawaz was recently seen in the smalltown romcom Motichoor Chaknachoor. He will next be seen making his interntional debut as a leading man (he had a cameo in the Dev Patel starrerLion) in Tannishtha Chatterjee’s Roam Rome Mein. Alas his little sister won’t be here to witness her star brother’s move to the next level in his career.
