Netflix Eyes K-Pop Demon Hunters Franchise Expansion with Sequels and Live-Action Adaptation

According to reports from The Wrap and Gizmodo, Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation are collaborating on plans for two direct sequels for KPop Demon Hunters that would complete a trilogy. While no official green light has been issued yet, internal sources suggest that development is actively underway. Netflix is also considering a live-action adaptation and even a stage musical, showcasing its ambition to turn the animated film into a cross-media powerhouse.

Reactions from Korean online communities are coming in fast and fierce. While some fans are cautiously optimistic, others are raising red flags over everything from casting to cultural handling. Below are translated reactions from Theqoo, where fans debate whether KPop Demon Hunters should stick to animation or dare to venture into live-action territory:

  1. Live-action could actually be fun — if they cast someone who can really sing.
  2. Ugh, I don’t think Netflix has ever succeeded when they overdo anime stuff. And judging by what they did with that Marilyn Monroe thing or that one about Egyptian history — all those controversial documentaries — they’re just not it.
  3. If they insist on doing live-action, I wonder — will they cast fully Korean actors speaking Korean? Or Korean-Americans speaking English? Since it’s K-pop-themed, anything but real K-idol casting will feel off. And if they do cast idols, can they even act?
  4. Can we just talk about making a second season instead? Just keep the K-Demon title and don’t let some other country piggyback off it.
  5. Don’t do live-action. Just make more merch instead, please.
  6. Why does every popular anime get dragged into a live-action adaptation? No one asked for this…
  7. Please just leave live-action alone.

Directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, KPop Demon Hunters has garnered international acclaim not only for its unique blend of K-pop and demon-slaying action but also for its stunning animation and compelling character arcs. Lead voice actors Arden Cho, May Hong, and Ji-young Yoo have expressed interest in returning, while creators have hinted at expanding character backstories in future installments.

KPop Demon Hunters

KPop Demon Hunters is Netflix’s answer to Frozen,” a Netflix executive was quoted saying, suggesting the platform’s high hopes for the IP’s global reach and cultural impact. The film’s original soundtrack, led by the viral hit “Golden”, has dominated global charts, even hitting #1 on the Billboard Global 200. Its strong musical identity makes it a prime candidate for stage adaptation, a possibility that is also under review by Netflix and Sony.

Although the sequels and live-action adaptation are still in the planning stages, fans can expect major announcements in the coming months. As Netflix continues to diversify its original offerings, KPop Demon Hunters may soon become one of its flagship franchises, bridging the worlds of animation, music, and live-action storytelling.
