A new nature documentary series, complete with a horror twist that Blumhouse is known for through their TV and movie output, is set to arrive on Netflix globally on September 30th, 2025.

First unveiled in July 2023 (albeit without Netflix attached at the time) with production wrapping up just recently, the docu-series is now ready for release. Across multiple episodes, the series showcases animal heroes struggling to endure the real-life terrors of the natural world. It reimagines natural history filmmaking through a horror lens, where trees bleed, zombie snails crawl, and vampire fish rule the waters. Among the creatures we’ll see in these episodes are a little frog, a baby crocodile, snakes, raccoons, and mice.

Nightmares of Nature is produced by Blumhouse Television and Plimsoll Productions. The former has worked on Netflix’s Worst Roommate Ever and Worst Ex Ever, with the latter best known for titles like Incredible Animal Journeys, A Real Bug’s Life, and Queer Planet

For Blumhouse, Jason Blum, Chris McCumber, and Gretchen Palek are executive producers. For Plimsoll, Grant Mansfield, Alan Eyres, Tom Hugh-Jones, and Martha Holmes are executive producers.

“It’s only natural to be scared about the things that go bump in the night, but Nightmares of Nature isn’t a projection of the supernatural. Once you start looking at the natural world, you will find things as terrifying as anything in a horror movie,” Alan Eyres, Head of Plimsoll USA, has said in a previous statement. “To tell that story, we could not hope for better collaborators than Blumhouse. Combining the world’s greatest horror filmmakers with some of the world’s best natural history storytellers is a unique opportunity to create a more visceral, emotional point of entry to nature than anything we’ve seen before.”

Netflix previously declined to comment when we reached out about the series.

This adds to a slew of Netflix nature documentaries produced by the streamer and licensed over the years. This series, in particular, is perhaps most similar to Night on Earth, a limited series released in 2020, which followed wildlife during the night with groundbreaking new technology. Elsewhere on the nature documentary slate, Life on Our Planet is returning for season 2, Our Water World was scheduled for release sometime in 2025, and next year will see the release of The Dinosaurs, a new collaboration between Silverback Films and Industrial Light and Magic.
