Unbreakable and perfectly balanced, Captain America‘s shield is one of Marvel’s greatest weapons – but the new leader of the Avengers just found a way to make it even more powerful.
Dani Moonstar Makes Captain America’s Shield Even More Powerful
In this week’s X-Vengers #1 – from Jason Loo, Sergio Fernández Dávila, Aure Jimenez, Rain Beredo and Joe Sabino – Dani Moonstar takes over leadership of the Avengers, wielding Steve Rogers’ iconic shield. Thanks to her mutant powers, she’s able to charge the shield with psionic energy, allowing it to land with an explosion of power.
Set ten years in Marvel’s future, X-Vengers sees iconic Avengers including Black Widow, Hawkeye and Shang-Chi transformed into mutants by a deadly virus. With Steve dead, the newly-transformed superhumans need training, and Dani Moonster (aka Mirage) has stepped up to the plate.
Dani’s immense skill allows her to wield Cap’s shield following his death, however she’s also able to use it in conjunction with her powers. As well as charging the shield with psionic energy, she can summon visions of her target’s greatest fear to distract them.
While it’s not explicitly stated, it’s likely Dani can use the shield to shut down the minds of those she hits with it – something she’s done in the past when using weaponry constructed from her psionic powers (most commonly psionic arrows.)
Steve Rogers’ Legacy Lives on Thanks to New Avengers Leader
Part of the Age of Revelation event, X-Vengers sees the Avengers attempt to protect the world in an era where a mutant despot has slaughtered most of America. While they’re no friends of Revelation’s regime, the Avengers exist in a state of ceasefire with the mutant nation, leading to major distrust from the public.
Dani may initially seem like an unusual successor for Captain America, especially with Sam Wilson still alive. However, the former Falcon is now president of what remains of America, and it’s clear that Dani held the team together after they transformed. The former leader of the New Mutants, Dani is an expert on training neophyte mutants and is also an experienced therapist.
Giving the Avengers a mutant twist has resulted in a fascinating team, but it’s also given Dani Moonstar a much-deserved moment in the limelight, highlighting her as a leader on par with Steve Rogers. It’s no coincidence that she’s wielding Captain America‘s shield, as she finds new ways to wield both the iconic weapon and the Avengers legacy.
