Happy Friday, and welcome to another rundown of the new releases that just touched down on Netflix. It’s been a busy week of Netflix news, and the releases have been pretty decent and varied, too, along with a few surprises that weren’t initially programmed. Below, we’ll look at what you should be watching this weekend, along with the full list of 33 new releases and what’s been topping the US charts.

While there’s still one full week left of August, you may be wondering what’s coming up on Netflix throughout September. Earlier in the week, Netflix dropped its list of what’s coming up, and we just got a handful of new titles announced today that we’ve now included in our comprehensive list

What to Watch on Netflix This Week

Hostage (Limited Series)

Number of episodes: 5
Rating: TV-MA
Language: English
Genre: Drama, Thriller
Cast: Suranne Jones, Julie Delpy, Lucian Msamati

The big new Netflix Original series is a new British political thriller series that was originally developed under a different name and has some top UK talent topping the cast list. The story centers on the British prime minister’s husband being involved in a kidnapping plot that also ties in with the French president beginning to receive threats.

We gave the series a four-and-a-half-star rating, citing that it continues Netflix’s excellent UK run of hits over the past couple of years. We concluded, “Picking out criticisms is particularly difficult, which is a testament to how good this series is. It constantly keeps up the suspense, but there’s certainly a predictability about how things will play out. It’s a twisty series, but so many of the key twists feel more inevitable than shocking.”

Hostiles (2017)

Rating: R
Language: English
Genre: Drama, Western
Director: Scott Cooper
Cast: Scott Shepherd, Rosamund Pike, Ava Cooper
Writer: Scott Cooper, Donald E. Stewart
Runtime: 134 min / 2h 14m

One of the surprises this week came in the form of the 2017 movie Hostiles, which is streaming on Netflix US for the first time in seven years. Set in 1892, Hostiles is a brutal Western that follows U.S. Army Captain Joseph J. Blocker, a hardened soldier with a deep-seated hatred for Native Americans. On the verge of retirement, he is given one final, unwelcome order from the President: to escort a dying Cheyenne war chief, Yellow Hawk, and his family back to their tribal lands in Montana.

The movie still holds a respectable 71% on RottenTomatoes to this day, with the consensus being, “Hostiles benefits from stunning visuals and a solid central performance from Christian Bale, both of which help elevate its uneven story.”

If you love the likes of Dances with Wolves, 3:10 to Yuma, Bone Tomahawk, or True Grit, this is for you.

Broke (2025)

Rating: R
Language: English
Genre: Drama, Western
Director: Carlyle Eubank
Cast: Wyatt Russell, Dennis Quaid, Auden Thornton
Writer: Carlyle Eubank

Sticking with the rustic vibe, we move on to Broke, which comes to Netflix following its VOD release earlier this Summer, given that it skipped a theatrical release altogether, which is a tragic shame, given that it’s a very well-constructed and acted film. Quick note, though, if you’re signing up or wanting to watch this on the Netflix ad tier, you’ll be out of luck. As with all Sony Pictures releases, this is currently blocked on Netflix’s advertising tier

The synopsis reads, “Stuck in a blizzard alone, a bronc rider with brain trauma fights to survive and reflects on how his career could lead to his untimely death.”
