More than a decade after its initial release, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is still getting new mods, and a popular new option improves on a very specific aspect of the game. Skyrim was released in 2011 as the fifth game in the Elder Scrolls franchise, but the fantasy exploration game became immensely popular even among gamers who had never played an Elder Scroll game. The game offered players freedom of a nearly unprecedented scale and a gorgeous, open world to traverse, with graphics and visual elements that remain impressive even by today’s standards.

In the years since, the game has continued to captivate players and keep fans interested, in large part thanks to the modding community. Skyrim mods are plentiful and varied, ranging from new armor styles to entirely new content expansions with fresh lore to uncover. But some mods focus on upgrading the visual elements of the title, improving on its already beautiful environment. “Real Water for Volcanic Mineral Pools,” the newest mod from wSkeever on Nexus Mods, falls into this category improving the way the water in the game’s volcanic mineral pools appears.

Realistic Water Mod Brings “Real Water” To Skyrim

The Mod Improves On The Existing Textures And Even Has Customizable Options

The hyper-specific mod delivers on its promised upgrade, turning the already impressive-looking pools of water into even more realistic versions. Thanks to the mod, the water in the pools has a depth and realistic reflections to it that are missing in the original version. The mod even has two options for the water color (custom and the in-game version) and two variations for the transparency (more or less transparent water).

Although this mod is touts that it adds “Real Water” to Skyrim, the modder adds a much-needed disclaimer to keep fans from trying to reach into their computer screens: “The water is not actually real. This is a video game, and video games are not real.”

It may seem like a small update to a very specific part of the game, but this little change makes a big difference in the overall look of the game. It’s no wonder, then, that the mod already has over 10,000 downloads (around 5,300 unique downloads) and 440 endorsements on Nexus Mods.

Elder Scrolls lore is strange, and with players embracing the niche, it is the perfect time to make the sixth installment as weird as the lore.

This mod uses the Base Object Swapper mod, the original mod created back in 2011 to, as the name implies, swap items out for one another. Not only does this allow for some fun item swaps, it also lets creators like wSkeever improve the visuals of the classic fantasy game.

Modders Help Fans Wait For More Elder Scrolls Games

Skyrim modders add variety and new details to the game, from realistic textures to unhinged character model swaps. Modders are excellent at prolonging the life of older games in general, with active communities existing for beloved titles like the Fallout franchise and Stardew Valley.

Rumors of the next Elder Scrolls games abound, with recent leaks revealing the potential remaster of The Elder Scrolls 4 on the way. But even in light of new games, beloved titles like The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim will continue to live on as long as fans continue to update and add on to the game.
