Shield returns in new Captain America comic with Nick Fury

Marvel Comics Editor in Chief C.B. Cebulski and writer Chip Zdarsky confirmed the return of S.H.I.E.L.D. at the Lucca Comics & Games festival.

They explained that Captain America #6 will introduce an all new version of the organization and that the storyline begins in January as part of the Road to Armageddon. Marvel listed the creative team as Chip Zdarsky writing the arc with art by Delio Diaz and Frank Alpizar. The cover art is by Valerio Schiti.

Cebulski stated, “Ever since S.H.I.E.L.D. disbanded almost 10 years ago, the idea of bringing it back has come up at every creative retreat we have had” and added that the return aligns with the sixtieth anniversary of the group’s debut.

Zdarsky said, “When the possibility of a new S.H.I.E.L.D. came along, we just hit the ground running” and described the mandate and scope as newly defined. Marvel confirmed that the arc follows the aftermath of One World Under Doom as Steve Rogers deploys to Latveria to confront a resurfaced threat while external forces arrive.

Marvel revealed that Nick Fury Jr. will lead a re formed unit that is smaller and more underground. The lineup includes Joe Ramos, Charles Castlemore, Trevor Tambling, and Red Widow.

Marvel noted that the team will pursue Doom’s weapons. The mission could place them in direct conflict with Captain America. Marvel also released new images of Fury. The design includes blue accents in his suit, a black vest, boots with blue interiors, and glasses with one lens fully blacked out.

Marvel stated that this is the first official appearance of S.H.I.E.L.D. since the 2017 Secret Empire storyline. The group dissolved after Hydra infiltration. Recent comics showed Fury working independently. These stories involved the Infinity Stones, Skrull operations, and covert missions with Maria Hill.

Marvel confirmed that Captain America #6 goes on sale January 21.
