Onir’s Film On Down’s Syndrome Moves You To Tears

Subhash K . Jha

Published

on

Onir’s  emotionally fulfilling documentary Raising The Bar on those afflicted with  Down’s Syndrome must be an imperative part of every human being’s process of social awakening.

It’s not just those people whose lives are affected by this affliction. The film, shot in Australia and India with the active contribution of those lovely children and young persons trying to assimilate into mainstream society, takes us on an emotionally overwhelming journey with the parents of progenies with Down’s Syndrome. These incredibly brave parents talk with unconcealed emotion about their shock and hurt when they first discovered their children’s special condition and how they eventually coped with the condition with a dogged determination to ensure that their children integrate into the mainstream.

As you watch these beautiful boys and girls dancing, laughing, or simply walking on the street or just getting ready to leave for their jobs, your heart fills up with pride and grief for all those souls in the world who have learned to stand tall in the face of crippling disadvantages.

Onir says the making of Raising The Bar was an emotionally devastating experience for him. “We shot the film in Australia and India.  And  I realized the importance of inclusiveness, of ensuring that people who are born special get a proper place in society, not just through the support system created by parents family and friends but society at large. To my horror and shock, I realized that in India we do not even provide the basic amenities in public places that are required by people born with special abilities. In India how many movie theatres accommodate wheelchairs? The disability gets as basic as that.”

Comparatively, Onir found Australia far more friendly towards those born with Down’s Syndrome. “In India it is considered a curse by some sections to be born with a   child with Down’s Syndrome. In my documentary, you hear a Maharashtrian  mother reveal how she was advised my well-wishers  to smother her child with Down’s Syndrome  under  a pillow.”

What we see in the documentary is not only the indomitable spirit of the young people afflicted with this disability but also the determination of their parents to give them as normal an upbringing as possible.

Onir has formed a lifelong bond with all the parents and children who form a part of his documentary. “I  think it is very self-serving and cruel to befriend people just for your film and then forget them. Two of those with Down’s Syndrome  who figure in my documentary live in Delhi and  I try to visit them every time I am  in the city.”

Onir wants the message of Raising The Bar to go as far as possible. “I have a show for social workers, NGOs politicians and activists in Delhi on Feb 20 and then another later in the month in Mumbai. I want an awareness to be created as to why it is important for all of us to be patient and compassionate with those who are not as quick to assimilate as normal people are. We need to create  a decent space for the specially abled.”

Promoting Urdu, But No Javed Akhtar?

Subhash K . Jha

Published

Javed Akhtar

The decision  taken by  The National Council  For  The Promotion  Of Urdu Languages  to use Salman Khan,Shah  Rukh Khan and Katrina  Kaif to promote the  Urdu language has  triggered off a wave  of  outraged protest.

The  social media has  rightly ridiculed  the decision, pointing at Javed Akhtar among  the people most qualified  to promote the  language as he can both read and  write Urdu fluently(which  Shabana Azmi cannot).

When contacted Javed Saab  refrained from comment as this matter involves his former creative  partner Salim  Khan’s son Salman who  it must be  mentioned  can’t speak  or write  Urdu and pronounces  ‘Khan’ as ‘Caan’.Shah Rukh speaks Urdu  but cannot write it. Katrina  can’t speak two lines of Hindi at one go.

If you ask me this  is  the lowest  kind of  communal appeasement and  the worst  sort of  reflex action . Those who decided that these three stars(Salman,  Shah Rukh , Katrina) must promote Urdu just checked their  surnames  and their  box office ratings. The level of  presumption in the selection is alarming.

Why should you  presume that Shah Rukh,Salman and Katrina  can even speak  or write Urdu  on the basis  of their  religion? You are presuming that every Muslim reads  and writes Urdu and that Urdu is restricted  to  Muslims only. But  a language is not about religion. It’s about region. Gulzar Saab  is not Muslim.  But he  can  read and  write Urdu fluently. Dharmendra  writes his  poetry in fluent Urdu. Manoj Kumar is also  fluent in Urdu. Why  shouldn’t these distinguished cinema personalities  be promoting Urdu?

It seems  like  nothing  but  a pathetic attempt to divide the  country  on  the basis  of language.

It  happened  in Pakistan when they tried  to make everyone  speak in Urdu. But a large  chunk of the population chose  to speak Bangla .Rather than bow to  the uniform code of language  they fought for their freedom. And Bangladesh was born.If you  try to restrict Urdu to the Muslim community you are playing  the worst  kind of divisive politics.

Coming back to  Javed Akhtar, who  better  qualified than he  to promote  the Urdu language? He is secular in the  truest sense  of the word. He can write songs in  virile  Urdu as well in  fluent Hindi. This  is  the same poet par excellence who  wrote the  Holi song  Radha kaise na jale in  pur Braj bhasha and  the  Urdu ghazal  Shahr Ke Dukan-Daro Karobar-E-Ulfat Men Suud Kya Ziyan Kya Hai Tum Na Jaan Paoge without ever  letting the language come  in  the way of his thought  process.

After New Zealand Would Hotel Mumbai Be Banned In India As Well?

Subhash K . Jha

Published

on

After  the horrific  attack on  a mosque  in  New Zealand  the  NZ government has  banned  the  theatrical  screening  of  Anthony Maras’  Hotel Mumbai, the deeply  disturbing haunting and finally rewarding butdamnifying  movie about the 26/11  attacks on  the  Taj Hotel in Mumbai which left 164 dead and many more scared and scarred for life.

Now the  film is all set to release  in India  on March 29.

Hotel  Mumbai  is  a relevant  film. But it’s also dangerous to show Muslims as radicalized  terrorists. The  prime minister of  New Zealand realized what kind of global chaos  inverted extremism can lead to. What  if the white population  of  the world takes up  arms against Muslims  across  the world?  This is a new  danger that has now permeated  into the  global scourge  of  terrorism.

In Bollywood historical films  like Padmaavat and Kesari show Muslims as red-eyed fanatics plundering looting and killing with sadistic glee.  This may  not be  the  best method to portray extremism in the context of  the lurking danger  of  white radicalization.

The very popular  Armie Hammer  who plays a white American married to Muslim woman(Iranian  actressNazneen Bonaidi) has gone to  great lengths in his  promotional  interviews  to separate the Muslim  population  from radicalized Muslims. The film’s Iranian  leading lady has also repeatedly asserted that she would  never part of any film that insults  the Muslim  community.

But then  the reality  of the Muslim population’s  relationship with the  Great White World  has been  thoroughly  exposed  in the NZ shooting. The NZ prime minister has  banned the  playing of  the video that the NZ attacker  recorded while shooting his  victims. The possession  of, and even  the playing of  the live recording of  the NZ massacre is  illegal in the  country.

Hotel Mumbai  uses   the  tape transcripts  of conversations  of the terrorists and their family and their  masters. Should that be allowed? Should  the  Indian  censor board step in and  clean   out  the film, ensure that Muslims are  not seen as the enemy  and  that there  is  a line dividing  Muslims  from extremists which most Muslims  never dream  of crossing.

Anupam Kher  who plays  the pivotal role  of  the  Taj chef Hemant Oberoi feels Hotel Mumbai has nothing to send  out wrong signals  about the Muslim population. “It is  about a  situation and an incident that is  not forgotten the worldover. No one blamed any community or section of civilians  for what happened  on 26/11. I don’t think that has changed.”

The Narendra Modi Bio-pic Trailer Mercilessly Trolled

SKJ News Bureau

Published

The  much-vaunted Narendra  Modi bio-pic PM Narendra Modi  has become the brunt of  the biggest troll  torrent in recent times. Blat

ant  attempts  to  project  the  Prime Minister as seen  in the trailer,as  the messiah  of  the downtrodden have thetwitterati in splits, so much so that prominent sections from  within the  BJP are worried  if this film will actually serve the purpose of winning Prime Minister Modi or just driving potential voters away.

Says a BJP loyalist,  “Let’s  not judge the  film before it is released. But yes, the trailer is   not what we  expected it to be.The presentation  could be more classy.”

What  about the historical facts such as  the  2002  Gujarat riots  which seen to have been swept  clean out of view ?

“It is not a  whitewash  job sanctioned by  the  prime  minister,  we can tell you that. Not is it a propaganda  film funded by the  BJP.We  didn’t ask  for this film to be made,” says a  well-placed  source who feels the  PM may just distance  himself  completely  from the  bio-pic….

“If  the heckling  continues  PM Modi would not associate himself with this film,” says  a party representative.

Curiously  Vivek Oberoi’s father Suresh Oberoi is mentioned  in the credits of  the  trailer  as one  of  the  film’s producers. Omung Kumar  who directs this  bio-pic is no stranger to the genre having made films on Mary Komand Sarbjit Singh in  the past. Apparently this time Omung was  given a blueprint on how to process the bio-pic in a particular  mood .

Embarrassment For The Prime Minister Via Bio-pic

SKJ News Bureau

Published

on

The  Narendra Modi  bio-pic directed by Omung Kumar  is proving to be  a source of huge embarrassment for the Modi government. Not  only has the trailer been terribly trolled  it now appears  that the  film’s producers are adding on names of  heavyweight  artistes in the film’s  credit titles , artistes who have nothing  to  do with the project.

First it was  Javed Akhtar  who  called out  the fraudulence  in  the  film’s  publicity and posters where his name was mentioned as  one of  the lyricists. To  the  utter embarrassment  of  the film’s team Javed  Akhtar tweeted his protest saying he had  nothing to do with the  bio-pic.

Another well-known lyricist Sameer whose name was also  in the credits has come forward  to state he was  no part  of  the  project.

One now hears that Prasoon Joshi whose  name is also in the credits of the trailer   has not written any lyrics for  the bio-pic, though he  is not coming  out with a denial  due to his closeness to the Prime Minister.

Sources  close  to  the  BJP state  that  the  Prime Minister’s office intends  to distance  itself from this unauthorized  bio-pic.

Delhi Crime Is Chilling In Its Atmospheric Pressure

Delhi Crime(Netflix series)

Starring Shefali Shah,  Rasika Duggal

Directed  by Ritchie Mehta

Rating: *** ½(3 and a half stars)

It isn’t easy being on the  right side  of  the  law when all you get  for your efforts is  brickbats  and  insults  from fencesitters.

To say that this disturbing but finally redundant  real-life crime drama  whitewashes the khaki uniform  would be  frivolous  and  irresponsible  to the extreme. What it does do is to humanize the police force by showing a cluster of fiercely committed  police persons(the two  main Khaki persona in  the story are women) driving themselves over the edge to nap the perpetrators  of the crime.

Did  the  cops on the case really show this level of commitment?  Does  it matter? Heroism  on  a level where  it  heals society is unquestionable.

Recreating in vivid vicious  colours  the  events  before during and after  the life-changing ‘Nirbhaya’ gangrape in Delhi, this 7-part series spares  us the  brutality  of watching the rape but protects  from none of the trauma  and horrific aftermath  of  a crime that shook the conscience of the nation.

As  we hear  our  drama’s hero Vartika Chaturvedi say, this crime was different, the savagery  was  unprecedented. She got it right.

I will  never forget the  sequence where the ravaged  girl is rolled into the  hospital bloodied brutalized  beyond all  human explanation, in pain beyond all endurance she tells her father, “I will be fine.”

We do  that  all the time. We keep saying things will be fine when we  know  they will only get worse.

Director  Richie Mehta  negotiates with  powerful hands the many  hurdles that a crime investigation so complex must  face. This is  a very professionally handled  crime drama, superior to some of  the real-life crime dramas on television ( some of which are  not bad at all) mainly for  the level of  performance  director Mehta gets  out  of  the cast speciallyShefali Shah. But it doesn’t achieve that  level of  emotional impact that  I expected  from the  product considering the fine talent that’s gone  into it.

There are two reasons  why Delhi Crime stops short  of being a  masterpiece  on real-life crime. For one  it  holds back way too much of the angst  probably to appeal to a global audience. The attempt to subdue  the  sheer insanity of  the crime is admirable  but eventually a fatal error of judgment.

A  more immediate  crisis  of efficacy emerges from  the fact that Delhi Crime  resembles a  very recent Netflix film Soni which was in   every way  a superior work. The domestic disarray in the life of the female cops  and the  professional dynamics  between  two female officers in Soni is echoed here  in  the rapport that grows  between the two cops played by Shefali Shah and Rasika Dugal, both in fine  form imbuing  the  contours  of crime with  an implosive reined-in anger at a system that fosters  inequality and  brutality.

Shefali Shah is specially powerful. She  is compelling  because her anger internalized, palpable. She  not only anchors  the series  with her persuasive presence, she also diminishes  and decimates  the  rather disturbing feeling we get that this  sort of stark recreation of  India’s most well-known sex  crime serves no  purpose except to remind us that the change we hoped to see in  the  number   of  rapes in  our country never happened.

Nirbhaya lives, and dies, again.  Long live Nirbhaya.

Ajay Devgan Goes From 17th Century to 1950s-60s

Subhash K . Jha

Published

on

Ajay Devgan is busy wrapping up his bio-pic on Maratha warrior Tanaji Malusare. Thereafter he goes straight into another bio-pic, on Syed Abdul Rahim who is known as the founding-father of football in India.

Devgan has been prepping for the Syed Abdul Rahim bio-pic even while completing his shooting as the 17th century Maratha warrior.

“In the Rahim bio-pic Ajay has to portray the character from 1952 to 1962. It’s a completely different era , mindspace and body language and Ajay Devgan has been quietly researching on Syed Abdul Rahim and honing his skills in the game of football although Ajay doesn’t have to play much football in the film. He is a coach not a football player,” says a source.

Interestingly Amitabh Bachchan too plays a real-life football coach in his next release Jhund. So are we looking at a prolonged phase of a national sport other than cricket getting its due in Indian cinema?

How To  Train  Your Dragon: The  Hidden World(animation)

Directed  by Dean  DeBlois

Rating: * ½ (one and a half stars)

Do yourself a favour this festive weekend.Use  your time for  more  constructive endeavours.  May be  that molar surgery which  you’ve been avoiding?  Or a  visit to  a really boring uncle which puts you to sleep even before you  reach his home.

How To Train  Your Dragon : The Hidden World  pans out the  story from the earlier    two  films, both of which were pretty ho-hum in conception and  treatment. But at  least they qualified as faintly fascinating  fluff.

This one  is  not even halfway  there. It is  an embarrassingly low-calibre  eco-friendly  flick with  splashy  artwork and  silly animation pitching in for true inspiration. The third film in the series  is so blatantly an attempt  to  stretch a successful idea that it seems  an embarrassment for  all concerned.

Our young hero  Hiccup(vibrantly voiced by Jay Baruchel) is still enamoured of  dragons and he still protects and preserves them the way normal people would care  for their family.

I really don’t follow this unhealthy passion  for  dragons  . Unless canines and cats have become passe over the years. The  fire-spewing dragons are designed  in shades  of  blotchy fantasia. Big bulky unwieldy creatures oscillating  merrily between fun and  fearsome, mostly  the former. I mean, who gets  scared  of computer-generated animation?

There is a  villain ,Grimmel the Grisly voiced with eclectic menace by F Murray Abrahams. He wants to  capture  all the dragons for his own selfish concerns. He’s welcome  to them.

But hang on. There are  more good souls in this  film  than  bad. The villains get easily outnumbered and outwitted. There  is romance too. Between two dragons a   black and white one. Think  there is a message  of racial  harmony in  that fiery liaison. But two  dragons  flying to  the  tune  of  dreamy  piped music is  not  my cup of tea.Or my pot of shuddh glee.

The  good news is that this is the  last part  of a trilogy. We bid a happy  farewell to this self-important  balderdash.

This strenuously designed animation film makes you wonder whom  it  is aimed at. Kids don’t watch such sassy mush. Grownups? Hell,  they’d rather see Captain Marvel. As for us, there are other far more  relevant dragons to slay this weekend.  let’s take  a vow to  watchKesari .

Newsbreak: Vijay Devarakonda In Hospital

This  Holi is  not so exciting and colourful for Telugu cinema’s fastest-rising star Vijay Devarkonda.

The  star who is currently immersed in  the  completion  of  his April release Dear Comrade  ,  checked  into a leading hospital  of  Hyderabad on Wednesday with high fever.

Says a  source  close to Vijay, “But it’s nothing  to worry  about. It’s just exhaustion. And  normally  one would  just have  to rest it out. But Vijay can’t afford a break right now. So he checked into the  hospital  for some swift and remedy  and relief to resume shooting  as soon as  possible.”

Says Vijay with  a chuckle, “What a way to celebrate Holi!I felt very weak and checked into hospital for treatment to recover quickly. I was shooting till 6  am on Wednesday morning and was down with fever. So rather than  waste time recovering I  made  a trip to the hospital.”

Vijay isn’t the  Indian  star  to  let his health suffer  because  of  overwork. Some  years ago Priyanka Chopra who  was  shooting round-the-clock had  to be hospitalized  for dehydration.

Amit Sharma , The Badhaai Ho Director Finally Speaks Up On The Writers’ Row

Subhash K . Jha

Published

on

Jyoti Kapoor claims she deserves credit for writing the script of Badhaai Ho?

Badhaai Ho! , the film that came out in October 2018, was written by Akshat and Shantanu, Ms. Jyoti Kapor had nothing to do with the story or the script that transcribed to the motion picture that was loved by the audiences.

Why haven’t you clarified the issue so far?

Whats appalling is that nobody has approached me aksing for clarifications . A director would be aware who wrote the film he is directing. I havent met Ms. Jyoti till date nor have I ever read the script of Hum do Humare Char which she claims has resemblance to Badhaai Ho. Jyoti had the same one-line idea which i was unaware of till I got to know the same from my producers Junglee pictures.

Now that Ms Kapoor has made her claims over the writing what according to you is the solution to the deadlock?

I have known Akshat and Shantanu since their froming years, they have been true to the art and dilligent with their work but never have they been cheats. Filmfare is one of the biggest platforms that gives recongnition to artists from the Indian Film Industry and makes them a household name. If Ms. Jyoti has truly contributed to the script of Badhaai ho, i request her to come out in the open with her script, and end this confusion once and for all.

Tell me a bit about the genesis of the Badhaai Ho script?

Akshat one of the writers on Badhaai Ho!, came up with this idea way back in 2012, for an ad campaign. He narrated the idea to me and we started work on the same. This was in 2015. Soon after when Priti got to know i was working on a similar idea, we met and she heard our story, she loved it so much that she said we should continue developing it. Akshat and Shantanu started developing the story which became Badhaai Ho!

So are you saying Jyoti Kapoor had nothing whatsoever to do with their script of Badhaai Ho?

I am not insinuating anything here neither am I leaving anything for the grey region, or for odd assumptions. The story was developed by only Akshat and Shantanu keeping Junglee in the loop. Ms. Jyoti nor her version of the story were ever responsible for what became Badhaai Ho!.

Our producer Priti Shahane spoke to Akshat and Shantanu and in good faith, they agreed upon giving Ms. Jyoti Kapoor the credit, for “Story for Junglee pictures”, as you can see it appear not with the main writers but towards the end of the credit roll.

Now Akshat and Shantanu have decided to withdraw their names from the Filmfare nominations?

I am saddened to hear that two hardworking individuals will be missing out on something they really worked hard towards. I wish Ms. Jyoti Kapoor all the luck, and success for her forthcoming projects.

Kesari Movie Review: It Is The Best War Film India Has Produced

Subhash K . Jha

Published

on

Kesari

Starring: Akshay Kumar

Directed by Anurag Singh

Rating: *****(5 stars)

21 soldiers holding  off thousands of invaders…sSunds very  filmy, no? But here is the thing.Life’s lessons learnt  from history  prove that  truth can  indeed  be stranger than fiction. And why just stranger? Truth is far  more stimulating and  enriching too . Kesari  proves it. Digging out a little  known uncelebrated  chunk of unbelievable bravery  , it makes us proud not just as Indians but also as  a country that produces  cinema  of  the highest calibre.

So  take  bow  , Anurag Singh for directing a  film which will be remembered  by many generations of  Indian  moviegoers as a turning point in  the  war genre  of cinema.

Unlike  the imposters  that stalk the silver screen with their phoney nationalism and  exasperating jingoism Kesari puts its  money where  its mouth is. The  actors playing  the 21  incredibly  courageous  Sardarjis who  took on the  Afghani invasion,  speak  of  the pride for their country with no effort to  create an  impression. These  soldiers  mean business. When pitched against  the  worst odds, they know they are destined to die.And yet they fight to their last breath. Why? Becase  there  is a country  to be protected

Kesari doesn’t valorize  death. But it certainly throws  the idea of  patriotic pride at us  at  a pitch we’ve never seen  or heard before. And I don’t just mean Raju Singh’s  background music which unnecessarily compounds  the  intrinsically dramatic  action scenes. That’s not the only  irrelevant  augmentation that this  flawlessly-written film suffers, Parineeti Chopra as  Havildar Ishar Singh’s phantom-wife serves  no purpose except to add a touch ofmuliebrity to this  pointedly masculine   film.

Kesari is  an astonishing achievement. Like Sanjay Leela  Bhansali’s  Padmaavat the second-half  of the nervewracking drama  is devoted entirely to the battle between the 21 Sikh soldiers against  thousands  of  Islamic  invaders who are  shot  like crawling insects in aerial shots that turn the turgidity of  war into a sharply  aesthetic  celebration of  war sentiments.

This is  not a film for the pacifists.  Kesari tells us, when  you got to fight  you’ve got to  give it your best shot even when  you know the  outcome.  No amount of praise  is  sufficient for the cast. Every one of  the actors playing the  21 Sikh soldiers  seems  to own his part in the way the  girls in Shah Rukh Khan’s hockey team owned  their parts in Chak De.

As  for Akshay Kumar, is  there any doubt that he is today’s finest star-actor  in   Hindi cinema? The restrained passion (evident in his  transformed  body language  and  his propensity to  state  the  truth without demur)  that he brings to  Ishar Singh’s part is sure to  get him the National award this year.I am sure  if Ishar  were be alive he would have  wanted to convey nationalistic valour with the same  muted ruggedness as Akshay  Kumar.

Of course these men who fought the battle  of Saragarhi were spectacularly brave. But the men behind this  film also display exemplary courage and confidence. Kesari is nearly  flawless in its rendition of  a battle of unequals where one man’s obstinacy becomes  a nation’s abiding pride and honour.

Don’t miss this film even  if  you watch only two films a  year.
