According to People, Mirren’s character “may or may not have been an agent for MI5 during her working years.” The movie is based on a book series by Richard Osman.

Brosnan plays a former “union activist,” Kingsley is a former psychiatrist, and Imrie is a retired nurse, according to Variety.

“I sort of went, ‘Oh, if they ever make a movie of it, I’d love to play that role.’ And I very, very rarely feel that, but I have to confess, I did feel that this time,” Mirren told People.

“There was a sense of, ‘Gosh, guys, isn’t this amazing?’” she added, according to People. “‘Here we all are again. How fantastic it is.’ It was a very appropriate feeling for the piece as well, the way these people, these characters come together in all their idiosyncrasies,” she continues, adding that their characters are “very funny, lovable, quirky, but flawed.”

According to Variety, the characters enjoy solving murders until “an unexplained death occurs on their own doorstep, involving them in a real whodunit.”

The movie is being directed by Chris Columbus, according to Variety. The publication noted that “The Thursday Murder Club” is the first book in the series, and it was purchased in a competitive auction.

“he story follows a group of friends in a retirement home who gather to solve murders for fun, but find themselves caught in a real case. Mirren will play ex-spy Elizabeth, Kingsley will play ex-psychiatrist Ibrahim and Brosnan will play former union activist Ron,” Netflix wrote in a news release.

“I’m so proud of this book, so it is a dream to see The Thursday Murder Club in such incredible hands. From Chris Columbus, to Amblin to Netflix, there are geniuses everywhere I look. And what a cast. I’m pinching myself,” Osman said, according to Netflix.

“This is the latest film to be produced as part of Netflix and Amblin’s film partnership, which also includes the upcoming Carry-On starring Jason Bateman and Taron Egerton,” Netflix wrote.
