Two directors who had been written off after their directorial debut made a bumper comeback the second and third week of August.
Tinu Suresh Desai who made the low-budget horror film 1920 London scaled his vision dramatically and conquered the box office with Rustom. Mudassar Aziz all but written off with Dulha Mil Gaya in 2010 returns to form with Happy Bhaag Jayegi. The film is showing improved attendance with passing day.
Says ‘Happy’ director Mudassar Aziz, “I feel humbled. Comparisons to some legendary names just make me nervous and I only manage to smile about it. It is a people’s film, one that has reached them with honesty. Some films need to yell “HIT” themselves, a fortunate few get “HIT” yelled at them by the audience! Happy Bhaag Jayegi’s boxoffice victory is the victory of the audience who loves happy, entertaining yet story-oriented cinema.”
Adds Suresh Tinu Desai, “I think everybody’s conviction which finally made RUSTOM such a huge success. It was a wonderful experience. And it would be an honour and a pleasure to get a chance to work with a such team again.”
The return of Desai and Aziz proves anything can happen in Hindi cinema
With two consecutive hits on two Fridays, should the releases this week be upbeat or worried?
Producer-director-writer Abhishek Jawkar whose thriller Missing On Weekend opens this week is confident about his film. “I don’t mean to sound over-confident, But I know I have made an honest and interesting thriller. My hero is not a conventional Khan or an over-hyped newcomer. I’ve cast an ACTOR Pavan Malhotra in the lead role . I know it’s not a conventional casting. But wasn’t Rustom and Happy Bhaag Jayegi accepted for their content? I am confident my film will be seen for its content. I know I’ve an uphill task ahead because I am coming with a big film like A Flying Jatt. I will all depend on how lucky I get with the numbers.”
Says trade analyst Atul Mohan, “If kids and family audience likes A Flying Jatt then the film can do wonders at the BO. Rustom had a dream run at the ticket windows and Happy Bhaag Jeyegi is witnessing growth in business with good word of mouth. So if A Flying Jatt does well then it has to be seen how it affects business of HappyBhaag Jayegi and not Rustom because till Friday Rustom would have done its maximum of lifetime business.”
