Sometimes life is more fun when you’re young, pretty, and keeping secrets. But any adult will tell you that secrets have consequences, and it’s something teens in Pretty Little Liars learned the hard way. It’s been eight years since the hit series by I. Marlene King ended, and while there have been attempts to recapture that vibe with two spin-offs, an unrelated show is the only one that comes close. We Were Liars premiered on Prime Video two months ago and has consistently remained one of the most popular shows on the platform. Despite facing stiff competition from weekly shows like The Summer I Turned Pretty and Countdown, the young adult drama continues to demonstrate how viewers forever crave seeing rich people behave poorly towards each other.
Created by The Vampire Diaries co-creator Julie Plec with Carly Adly MacKenzie, We Were Liars is adapted from E. Lockhart’s novel. We Were Liars follows Cadence Sinclair Eastman (Emily Alyn Lind) and her tight-knit inner circle, nicknamed the Liars, during their summer escapades on her grandfather’s New England private island. The Sinclairs are American royalty — known for their good looks, old money, and enviable bond — but after a mysterious accident changes Cadence’s life forever, everyone, including her beloved Liars, seems to have something to hide.
Is ‘We Were Liars’ Season 2 Coming?
Despite having positive reviews with a 60% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and strong, consistent viewership, the show has yet to be renewed for a second season. The closest update we’ve gotten about Season 2 is that it’s being crafted pending renewal. “They’re hard at work in presenting us with material on a Season 2, and there’s been quite a clamor from fans of that show to keep the story going. So we’ll see,” Prime Video’s Head of TV, Vernon Sanders, shared in an interview.
However, it’s looking good for the show, which was singled out for praise in a memo by a Prime Video executive. “Her [Kara Smith] extraordinary leadership and innovative vision helped craft The Better Sister and We Were Liars into must-watch series that have captured the cultural conversation,” Laura Lancaster, Head of US SVOD TV Development and Series – Co-Productions at Amazon MGM Studios, wrote. When Collider’s Christina Radish talked to Plec and MacKenzie about plans for Season 2, they revealed that they had ideas they could tap into. Plec said:
“We have a lot of paths we can go down in future seasons while continuing to watch this family, and specifically Cadence, rebuild their souls, so to speak, and continue to fight the good and/or bad fight in present-day Beechwood Island. We also have many, many, many skeletons of the past that we can unearth, by going back and seeing what Beechwood was like before too. We have big plans. We need big viewers, and we will get in there and bring you great new stories as soon as possible.”
