Sometimes on a chat show what a star wears becomes more important than what she says. Priyanka Chopra on Seth Meyers’ talk show this weekend wore what looked like a blazer which had seen better days. With holes drilled into her blazer in places where they had no right to be, the lady has been mercilessly trolled for what a lot of Indians as a very un-Indian way to express herself sartorially.
Priyanka is no stranger to being trolled for her clothes. Mr Modi would vouch for that.
To add to the element of cultural transgression she also admitted to her host Seth Meyers that her mother was a “beer lover”. And that she herself enjoyed her wine as much as any trueblue American. From Tuscany where Priyanka got to spend time shooting for the new season of Quantico, she got wine for all the rest of her Quantico team in NY as they did not get to shoot in Tuscany. Only our desi girl did.
Good for her. But what was the cute cribbing about her character Alex Parish getting constantly fired fron her jobs in the series because she is a “brown girl”?
Firstly does the serial ever nail down Priyanka’s cultural specificity? I don’t think so. Secondly why be facetious about
something as sensitive as racialism?
To Priyanka’s credit she did speak up in defence of Bollywood on Seth Meyers’ show , clarifying that there was no place named
Bollywood , that Bollywood was not a genre and that America is way out of line naming a popcorn flavour after ‘Bollywood’ .
So which stereotypical view would Priyanka like to change about Hollywood?
“That aliens land only in America. I’d like to see what it’s like when one of them lands in another part of the world,” she said.
At the moment we are watching Priyanka Chopra’s landing in America. More intriguing than any alien’s arrival.
