According to Chinese media outlet QQ, the overall television industry in China experienced a quiet year with few breakout hits. Among the actors struggling to leave a mark was Liu Xueyi, whose projects consistently underperformed despite strong production and star-studded partnerships.
The 34-year-old actor appeared in a range of genres throughout the year, from modern romance to historical fantasy. However, none managed to resonate with viewers. In What If, a modern drama co-starring Zhong Chuxi, the show only averaged 5.5 million views per episode. His historical drama Kill Me Love Me, alongside hit actress Wu Jinyan, also underwhelmed with just 15 million views per episode, despite Wu’s recent success in The Double.
Critics noted a concerning trend: regardless of whether Liu Xueyi acted alongside rising idols or established veterans, the outcome remained the same—flop after flop. His March drama A Moment but Forever with top-tier actress Tiffany Tang was mocked as a dull “middle-aged romance,” drawing only 14 million views per episode.
In April, Love Never Fails aired to much anticipation after being shelved since 2021. Originally starring Yuan Bingyan, the production had to recast the female lead with Hu Yihuan following Yuan’s tax evasion scandal. The drama, despite years of buildup, opened to dismal numbers, just 2 million views per episode.
Although Liu Xueyi had a chance to gain attention through In Blossom in 2024, which starred C-Drama darling Ju Jingyi, he was overshadowed entirely. Fans and media buzz focused solely on Ju Jingyi and second female lead Zheng Hehuizi, while Liu faded into the background.
Once praised for standout performances in Love and Redemption, The Blood of Youth, and Love at Night, Liu’s career momentum has stalled.
Complicating matters further was a scandal involving actress Yang Zi. The two were spotted sharing a cake slice, fueling dating rumors while he was still allegedly involved with actress Zhang Yuxi. The controversy sparked backlash, especially when Liu remained silent, leading to criticism that he lacked courage and integrity. Yang Zi bore the brunt of public scrutiny in the aftermath.
QQ notes that born in 1990, Liu Xueyi is at a crossroads. His window to ascend into top-tier stardom may be closing, and without breakout success or clearer public image, he risks being perpetually cast as a secondary lead overshadowed by female co-stars.
With four high-profile failures in one year, Liu Xueyi’s 2025 is being cited as a cautionary tale in the ever-competitive world of Chinese entertainment.
