. Gay writer Apurva Asrani, gay filmmaker Onir and bisexual filmmaker Shonali Bose, react:
Onir: “Any political party that recognises the rights of the LGPT community as human rights and IPC377 as an archaic British act is welcome . Hope this contributes to the overall movement to strike out IPC377.”
Apurva Asrani: “Fantastic! It’s a progressive statement. If so many of these leaders don’t have a problem with gay sex, then I wonder why Shashi Tharoor is made fun of when he raises the Private Members Bill in parliament?Truth is, most pro-homosexuality statements like the RSS Joint Secretary’s or Arun Jaitley’s are made out of context during interviews and conclaves. I wait for the day when they will put their money where their mouth is.”
Shonali Bose: In what is a significant shift from the Sangh’s conservative views on sexuality, while speaking at the India Today conclave, Dattareya Hosabale(RSS’ Joint General Secretary) said, "Why should the RSS have an opinion on homosexuality? It is not a crime as long as it does not affect the lives of others. Sexual preferences are personal issues. However, it took a mere 24 hours before Hosabale took the usual two steps back. On Friday, clarifying his comments, he tweeted “Homosexuality is not a crime, but socially immoral act in our society. No need to punish, but to be treated as a psychological case. Sexual preference is not just a personal issue but a basic human right. It does not and cannot be treated as if it’s a mental illness that needs psychiatric care or counseling. Whether pressured to back down or it is his own opinion – it’s unfortunate that Hosabale felt the need for the second comment which completely negates his first one.Section 377 is a colonial law – utterly backward and retrogressive with no place in a modern society. The RSS along with the rest of society should oppose
